The Art of the News is the first major retrospective devoted to the increasingly influential genre of visual narrative, comics journalism. The exhibition spotlights the groundbreaking work of author-artist Joe Sacco, a foundational figure in the field—and a graduate of the UO. Accompanying Sacco’s work are key pieces from an international group of artists who have developed comics journalism and are pushing the genre in new directions, including Gerardo Alba, Dan Archer, Thi Bui, Tracy Chahwan, Jesús Cossio, Sarah Glidden, Omar Khouri, Viktoria Lomasko, Sarah Mirk, Ben Passmore, Yazan al-Saadi, and Andy Warner. https://jsma.uoregon.edu/ComicsJournalism The Art of the News Comics Journalism On view from September 24, 2021 to January 16, 2022

Curated by Katherine Kelp-Stebbins, Professor of Comic Studies, UO Department of English, in consultation with Ben Saunders, Professor of Comics Studies, UO Department of English.

MICHAEL PARSONS ___________________________________________ FINE ART Located across the Park Blocks from the Portland Art Museum

Born in Bristol, Maine, Charles C. McKim studied art in Boston, Portland, Maine, and New York, before settling permanently in Oregon in 1911. He was proficient in both oil and watercolor painting , working primarily in an evolving Impressionist style, which employed broken brushwork (short strokes and dabs of color), beautifully developed impasto, a sophisticated color sense, and keen skills of observation, all melded into a highly expressive artistic vision. McKim achieved success in Oregon, exhibiting and selling his work, teaching, writing about art, and helping to found several organizations that promoted the work of local artists. He passed away in Portland in 1939, following an extended illness.
