School of Arts, Sciences & Education

A Note from the Dean: Dear colleagues,

We are now in the second year of our SASE Teaching and Learning series. This is a valuable leg of SASE’s professional development efforts, along with funding for opportunities through our Professional Development committee, college-wide opportunities, and the many initiatives offered through your departments. Many thanks to those who have shared your interests and expertise with your colleagues during these fora, and to those of you have joined in to learn, ask questions, and participate in the discussions. We’ve had sessions on a great range of topics: trauma-informed teaching, disruptive grading, time management, student engagement techniques, teaching lessons from travel, dealing with challenging

students, and more (don’t forget everyone’s favorite, solving Rubik’s Cubes). If you would like to lead a session in Spring, please complete the form here. Cheers, Sara

COREY SIMS

GERALD MAKI

We’re proud to announce that Gayle Cosby, a dedicated and innovative education program faculty member, has been selected to serve as our new Program Chair for Education! We hope you look forward to the new and exciting changes planned for our Education Program.

Corey Sims was one of thirty participants accepted into the Ivy Tech Leadership Academy for this academic year. The Leadership Academy is an amazing professional development opportunity for up- and-coming faculty to engage and collaborate with colleagues and mentors. This will help Corey to grow as a leader at Ivy Tech, and we’re so excited to see him excel!

Professor Gerald Maki was a proud recipient of the 2023 President’s Faculty Award as a representative faculty member of the Indianapolis campus. Gerald was chosen for his exceptional work and dedication to his students and the Ivy Tech Indianapolis Community. Please take a moment to congratulate him when you see him!

Long-time IVYT Adjunct Instructor Takes her Final Bow A decade and a half ago, Nicole Sears began teaching part time for the English Department under chair Vicki Buzash. Shortly thereafter, we were lucky enough to have Nicole teaching our IVYT students in various iterations of our class, from the now-defunct 3-credit-hour version (IVYT120) to now all versions of IVYT. Nicole has especially excelled at teaching the students in the School of Advanced Manufacturing, Engineering and Applied Science (SAMEAS) who are majoring in areas such as automotive, HVAC, welding, etc. Needless to say, sometimes these students need a little more convincing about the benefits of IVYT’s focus on soft skills, such as emotional intelligence, self-awareness and personal responsibility. Nicole has tailored the class to meet their needs, made it fun and set them up for success. Nicole will be leaving us at the end of the semester to focus on her day-job teaching at the Excel Center. For the last 15 years, our students and our team have been fortunate to have Nicole as an instructor.

On July 13th, Associate Professor Noor Hussain was able to do some fun, STEM-related experiments with the children at New Beginners Day Care in Indianapolis. She demonstrated several activities where students were able to actively engage in the experiments, such as dancing raisins, self-inflating balloons, lava lamps, and magic milk. The children had a lot of fun with the activities and were able to understand the concept behind the experiments, as well. She was assisted by her husband and daughter for this project. On November 7th, the Education Program, in collaboration with the SASE Speakers Committee, hosted a Teacher Panel featuring professional K-12 educators from IPS schools. Approximately 40 students attended and were able to

gain valuable expertise and insight from current practitioners! Future plans include additional opportunities for students to engage with teachers from different school districts.

Collaborations with History This seems like the best time of year to express my gratitude. I am so very grateful for our students, faculty, and community partners. This semester, the Early Childhood Education students have been giving back by volunteering and creating beauty in our little space on campus with the guidance of Candice Wise. Students graciously gave up some time on Saturdays to volunteer with First Steps of Indiana at a family literacy event, Buzz and Flutter, and were prepared to care for children at the EDUC Teacher’s Moderated Panel event. Candice asked students in her ECED 103 class to create a bulletin board on a curriculum concept called “Loose Parts.” They did a fabulous job and have included take-away information on the board with flyers on how playing with loose parts will enhance a child’s development. Try to meander outside of IFC 429 to enjoy the board and information. I have always known it takes a team effort to accomplish things, and I am feeling proud of our students who have gone above and beyond the classroom. Please enjoy some photos from these events. “ ” ~Rose Wilson, ECED Program Chair

Gerald Maki, Professor of English and UN Global Diplomacy Fellow, served as a “Distinguished Speaker” at the United Nations 78th General Assembly’s Science Summit. Gerald presented in “Shaping the Future of Global Diplomacy: Insights from UNITAR Fellows and Teaching Faculty” which featured remarks from two former UN Ambassadors. Additionally, Gerald served as co-moderator and session assistant for “Science Capacity Building for the Future: Defining the Skills Agenda” hosted at the Royal Norwegian Consulate in New York City. The session brought together scholars from four continents, including keynote Petter Næss, Exec. Director of the US- Norway Fulbright Foundation. The trip represented Gerald’s second visit to the United Nations in the past year, and he shared briefly about his experiences in the recent SASE Teaching and Learning Series talk “Critical Peace Education and Internationalizing the Curriculum.” If you are interested in having your class partner with students from outside the U.S., please reach out to Professor Maki.

Echoes of History

Codi Shoemaker, along with the assistance of several curators, the HoAm Art Museum, and Ivy Tech’s own beloved history professor, Jack Cooney, was able to solve a surprising mystery regarding a donated Korean vase. Labeled as a mid-12th century Goryeo Celadon and National Treasure no. 558, this maebyeong (meiping) vase was confounding the management of a local thrift store in Columbus, Ohio. However, after several months of investigation and confirmation from museum staff, the donated vase was found to be a re-creation.

Not to be confused with a forgery, this vase is one of many modeled after National Treasures in an attempt to revive Goryeo celadon technology and Sanggam inlay techniques. Though not a National Treasure itself, this vase has its own vital place in Korean history - and Codi’s heart, the proud new owner. You can read more information on Goryeo Celadon here.

LEFT: The original vase, currently in the possession of the Samsung Leeum Museum of Art and the HoAm Art Museum. It was designated as a National Treasure in 1971. The faded color and warped glaze are the result of almost 900 years of aging. RIGHT: The donated vase, which was likely made in the early 70’s. The shinier lacquer - and many other features, not seen - signify its much later creation.

Ivy Tech held its annual Spirit and Place event on November 4th at the Garfield Park Art Center. It was entitled Buzz and Flutter: Cultivating, Creating, & Caring for our Pollinators. Guests made art while also learning from community gardeners, beekeepers, and even chefs on how we can all work to sustain and nourish our local pollinators, especially bees and butterflies! Other activities included crafts, honey-tasting, seed preparation, and interactive exhibits. Our beloved SASE representatives came from our Fine Arts, English, and Early Childhood Education departments. Buzz & Flutter Shining a Spotlight on...

The LRC Art Gallery is proud to present some featured artwork from their most recent installation, REALMS OF DUALITY. The Gallery has since closed as they prepare for the upcoming Juried Student Art Show, but that doesn’t make this art any less sensational to look at! Moss - or, more accurately, mosses - don’t have roots! Instead, they have cell filaments called rhizoids, small hair-like structures that help moss attach to many different kinds of surfaces. The rhizoids can also help mosses obtain nutrients, but most mosses draw moisture and minerals from rain and the water around them through their highly absorbent surfaces. A Note from the Editor:

Hello, everyone! It’s hard to believe the end of the semester is just around the bend. It feels as if so much has happened between now and September, and yet it has all passed in the blink of an eye! I know personally, it’s been a bit of a tough journey as I continue to balance work, graduate studies, and late-stage capitalism, so I’m looking forward to taking a well-deserved rest this coming winter break. I hope you all will take the time to rest this coming winter break, as well. Spend valuable time with friends, pets, and/or loved ones, take those beloved afternoon naps, and express yourself through your favorite pastimes - whatever makes you feel happy and healthy! In the interim, keep up the great work - I understand that it may not always feel like it, but each of you are doing amazing. And if you ever need some support, you know where to find me! Thank you for reading this edition of the newsletter and continuing to support the School of Arts, Sciences & Education here at Ivy Tech Indianapolis. Please look forward to the next edition in the new year!
