CIRCULAR ECONOMY
*tap tap*... is this thing on? Hello! Welcome to another wonderful issue of Plant Planet! As the sun is beginning to shine and the world seems a little brighter, it’s the perfect time of year to become more aware of our planet and look at it through a greener approach. Good job this new issue focuses on just that! Firstly, you may have noticed a new name change… so, let me take this chance to welcome you to Machine Power Media! We are, however, still the same team. Darren Shelton has become our new Managing Director, and we’re so excited for this fresh, new beginning! Still the same family, just a new name. We can’t wait to share more of our new chapter with everyone, and as always, our commitment is with YOU in the construction and demolition sectors. Our Industry Corner (written by Ren Rush) and feature article (written by Lorna Cowlin) discuss fitting topics such as reducing your carbon footprint, going net-zero and the circular economy model, showcasing the companies that are following these protocols and how, and showing how the world of construction is giving back to the planet. The theme for this issue is important as it’s something that needs to be put into practise more. The construction sector is a significant contributor to global carbon emissions, accounting for roughly 40% of total emissions. So many companies, however, are trying to reduce this. It may be a big, tough industry, but if we all play our part and do our bit, we can thrive even more, knowing what we are doing is kind to the world we call home! And with that, I shall wrap up and conclude, and let you guys get reading! With all the love we try to give back to the planet, and all the joy that’s had on-site, I hope you can take that all with you as the sunnier weather approaches. Here’s hoping we have some lovely weather coming our way… we certainly deserve it! Happy reading! The Plant Planet Team

‘WINDBLOW’ PUTS PRESSURE ON FOREST OWNERS AND TIMBER SECTOR: SAYS M C HALE PLANT SALES
A lesser-known dimension to the work being done by McHale Plant Sales is their role as distributors in Ireland and Northern Ireland for Komatsu forest equipment. Included in them are harvesters (see photo) used to cut trees, strip surplus shoots and branches, and finish them into lengths ready for hauling to sawmills. A complementary Komatsu line are the articulated forwarders used to load and carry cut trees from the forest floor to the perimeter for onward collection by specialist hauliers used to deliver loads by road to sawmills for conversion into timber. A current problem occupying the minds of authorities, state and private forest owners, and independent forestry contractors alike – to whom McHale Plant Sales is a key supplier – is the urgent task of harvesting trees damaged and felled during the recent Storm Éowyn and the earlier Storm Darragh. Apart from the extensive damage they caused to homes, buildings,
infrastructure, and power supplies on both islands, few would imagine that the impact they had in Ireland and Northern Ireland would be replicated in forests throughout England, Scotland, and Wales as they undoubtedly were. The urgency arises from the fact that trees felled, uprooted, and lost to ‘windblow’ will rapidly deteriorate, lose condition and usefulness for conversion into timber if not harvested and processed as quickly as possible. In Ireland, industry experts put the volume of trees lost to storm damage at an estimated 11million cubic metres and possibly higher. Apart from the pressure already placed upon them by nature, timber hauliers and forestry contractors are being overwhelmed by additional storm- damage difficulties due in the main to a shortage of trained and qualified truck drivers and specialist timber harvesting machine operators whose services, were they available, would enable contractors and hauliers to attack the problem in an even more sustained fashion.
According to Darragh O’Driscoll, Business Development Director at McHale Plant Sales “the need to develop and promote careers in the industry will become increasingly more urgent as governments look to increase state and private planting as a key element in offsetting harmful CO 2 emissions and in advancing our commitment to sustainability and net-zero”. To that end, McHale has pledged to support any campaign that Coillte, the Irish state forestry authority, or timber harvesting contractors might initiate to encourage greater interest in forestry amongst young people and promote long-term careers in the timber processing sector.

MERLO ROTO: TODAY’S ROTATING TELEHANDLER OF CHOICE
A s job sites become more complex and space constraints increase, the need for versatile, high-performance lifting equipment has never been greater. Enter the Merlo ROTO series— an innovative range of rotating telehandlers that offer unmatched flexibility, efficiency, and safety. With models designed to suit a variety of applications, the Merlo ROTO is the go-to choice for contractors seeking an edge in productivity and adaptability. A ROTO FOR EVERY NEED Compact and Manoeuvrable: ROTO 40.16S & 40.18S At the entry level, the compact ROTO 40.16S and 40.18S (up to 4 tonnes and 15.8m and 17.7m lift height) offer a 415-degree rotation, making them ideal for confined urban construction sites and small-scale forestry applications. They feature a simple up and down stabiliser system and are equipped with a two-speed hydrostatic 40kph transmission. Eco Power Drive (EPD) maximises efficiency by adjusting speed only when needed, reducing noise levels and improving fuel economy. EPD also integrates a self-accelerating joystick, enhancing both performance and operator comfort.
Mid-Range Powerhouse: ROTO 50 Series Stepping up, the 5 tonne lift capacity ROTO 50.21SPLUS (21m), 50.26SPLUS (25.9m), 50.30SPLUS (29.2m), and 7 tonne, 70.24SPLUS (24.2m) feature the standout 20-degree tilting cab to give the operator the best possible view of high- elevation tasks. The dual hydraulic pump ensures faster cycle times, while the continuous rotation turret and “out and down” automatic stabilisers with levelling, simplify machine setup, improving both safety and efficiency. These models take the larger ZM3 Merlo ‘tac-lock’ headstock catering to loads over five tons. Heavy-Duty Excellence: ROTO 50.35SPLUS & 70.28SPLUS At the top end of the spectrum, the 5 and 7 tonne capacity ROTO 50.35SPLUS (34m lift height) and 70.28SPLUS (28m) come standard with CVTRONIC transmission, providing seamless acceleration from 0 to 40kph across tortoise and hair ranges. These machines are built for the most demanding job sites, delivering maximum performance with minimal operator effort. Innovative Features for Maximum Productivity All UK ROTO models come with a rear full-locking differential, controlled via a floor button for superior off-road traction. Well-positioned chassis steps facilitate
easy cab access, with additional engine- side steps on models exceeding 21m in lift height. Operator-Focused Cab Design The ROTO cab prioritises ease of use and comfort, featuring: • Simple and easy access to the cab; the door of a Merlo telehandler can lock open up to 180°. In addition, the inside of the door is equipped with a large handrail to help the operator when getting in and out of the cab • A convenient ground-level door latch eliminates the need to climb up to secure the cab. • 20 degree tilting cab (not compact 4 tonne models) • Developed according to automotive standards, Merlo’s optional cab air- conditioning cuts the warm-up and cool-down times in half compared to a conventional air conditioning system. The inlet vent is placed on the side of the cab, away from potential sources of dust and dirt, while inside there are 8 vents. Inside the cab, the operator can find clear, simple controls, grouped into three functional areas 1.Machine management: stabilisers, park brake, cab tilting (where present), steering, and suspension- (where present). 2.Joystick functionality: locks and continuous flow management.

Versatility Across Applications ROTO telehandlers aren’t just for lifting— they’re multi-functional workhorses. With a range of attachments, they can seamlessly transition into: • Cranes (with hooks and winches) • Aerial work platforms (with operator platforms) • Material handling solutions (with specialised booms) • Tree surgeons for safe removal of dying and hazardous trees Remote control allows operators to control turret operations from the ground or an operator platform, making them even more adaptable for diverse job site conditions. Why Contractors Choose Merlo Rotating Telehandlers Traditional telehandlers and cranes can be limiting in tight, complex workspaces. A Merlo ROTO eliminates these constraints by providing: • 360° rotation for superior reach and efficiency. • Higher lifting capacities and extended reach. • Multi-purpose functionality, replacing telehandlers, rough terrain cranes, and aerial work platforms with a single machine.
The Smart Investment For contractors navigating tighter deadlines, evolving regulations, and rising costs, investing in a Merlo ROTO telehandler means: • Increased productivity – up to 100% more efficiency compared to fixed telehandlers. • Reduced wear and tear on job sites due to minimal repositioning. • Greater versatility , allowing one machine to do the work of many. Whether renting or purchasing, a Merlo ROTO telehandler delivers unparalleled efficiency, safety, and adaptability, making it the ultimate lifting solution for today’s challenging construction environments. At bauma 2025, Merlo previewed an all-new ROTO range which will build on existing technology to deliver a host of new features set to increase safety and performance even further. The new range will be available in the UK in 2026.
3.Safety system operation: 10” screen for profile settings and movement limitations. Dual joystick operation: even with the left-hand joystick raised, in normal telehandler configuration, the right- hand joystick will still facilitate the slew function - ideal for pick-and-carry operations, maybe even taking materials to the lift site, when the operator may be in and out of the cab regularly. Customisation: the standard terminal allows users to set individual operator profiles. Different flow rates can be set to speed up or slow down certain functions and a movement limitation lock stop an operator accidently slewing into danger - improving precision and safety. Enhanced Safety Systems Advanced safety automation features: • Automatic stability recognition: If stabilisers aren’t fully extended – e.g. the area isn’t large enough for the legs to be fully extended, the machine recognises this and self-adjusts, restricting movement to the side where the legs are not fully deployed, preventing overload scenarios - a huge safety benefit • ASCS (Adaptive Safety Control System): A patented system that detects Merlo Treemme attachments via a headstock disc and dynamically adjusts load charts to prevent overloads.

WHEN TO RECYCLE CONCRETE? THE ANSWER IS NOW!
I f you work in demolition or construction, you know the problem all too well—concrete waste builds up fast. The more you demolish, the bigger the stockpiles get, taking up valuable space, increasing handling costs, and complicating logistics. The solution? Don’t wait. Recycle immediately. Every day that concrete waste sits unused, it represents lost money and wasted resources. By crushing it on-site, you instantly reduce its volume, transforming bulky debris into valuable material. But why is reducing the volume so important? • Turn waste into hardcore material – Once crushed, concrete can be repurposed for backfills, road foundations, drainage layers, or even new construction projects. No need to purchase new materials when you already have everything on-site.
STOP WAITING – START RECYCLING TODAY! Stockpiling is not a solution—it’s a costly delay. With MB Crusher, you take control of your materials immediately, cut expenses, boost efficiency, and unlock new opportunities on your job site. Stay tuned for the next episode, where we’ll explore even more ways to make construction and demolition smarter with MB Crusher. • Got stockpiles? Let’s crush them together! Contact us to learn more. MB Crusher showcased its products at Bauma, and also featured in the Demo area. To learn more about MB Crusher, please visit: www.mbcrusher.com/en/gb FOR FURTHER INFORMATION
• Optimize transport efficiency – Loose rubble takes up too much space in a truck, often leading to multiple trips and higher fuel costs. Crushed material is compact and denser, allowing you to transport more per load, saving both time and money. Whether you’re moving material to another site or selling it, a full truck is a profitable truck. • Eliminating the cost of transport to the landfill and the expense of purchasing materials for subbases is not only highly profitable for the builder but also an environmentally friendly practice. In fact, carrying out the recycling process with an excavator, which is often already present on-site, by simply attaching an MB Crusher Bucket is an extremely straightforward operation. It requires just one machine and a single operator, making this type of work easy, quick, and versatile.
SEE IT IN ACTION: REAL JOB SITES, REAL SAVINGS One of our customers is proving this every day. Using an MB Crusher BF90.3 mounted on a Volvo EC210, he efficiently crushes reinforced concrete on-site, separates the rebar with the MB 24 V Iron separator, and produces a clean, reusable aggregate—all in one step. • No waiting. • No unnecessary transport. • No waste. • Watch the process in action! – https://vimeo.com/1042906332?share=copy

F unding by the Construction Plant- hire Association (CPA) and other organisations has helped lead to the successful recovery of £890,000 of stolen plant and equipment in two recent police operations, says Superintendent Andy Huddleston who leads the National Rural Crime Unit and the National Construction & Agriculture Theft Team (NCATT). The CPA is contributing £90,000 over three years from 2024 - 2026 to help fight plant equipment theft and fraud, which is costing the construction plant industry millions every year. With additional funding from the Construction Equipment Association (CEA), Hire Association Europe (HAE), CESAR donors, insurers and other organisations, a total of £210,000 per annum is being contributed collectively over the next two years to help fund NCATT - a specialist team of police officers that cover the whole of the country to help tackle the theft of construction plant and equipment by organised criminal groups. The funding has recently supported two significant police operations which
have helped recover large quantities of plant and equipment stolen from CPA members. Superintendent Andy Huddleston said: “Over a 10-day period two NCATT operations resulted in multiple strikes on locations in West Yorkshire, North Yorkshire, Leicestershire and Warwickshire. The two operations led to three arrests and the recovery of £540,000 of stolen matting and fencing and 36 pieces of machinery valued at £350,000, all of which were taken from hire companies. “It has also been announced that NCATT will receive £120,000 from the Home Office to help replace operational vehicles over the coming three years, something which is critical and very welcome,” he continued. Since NCATT was formed in January 2023, the unit has experienced growing success in recovering stolen plant and agricultural equipment. In 2023, NCATT successfully recovered almost £6.3m of stolen plant and equipment. This increased to £10.5m of recoveries in 2024, and 254 arrests were made. So far in 2025, almost £5.4m of stolen plant
and equipment has been successfully recovered, and 68 arrests have been made. CPA Chief Executive Officer Steve Mulholland said: “It’s excellent news that our funding is helping lead to the recovery of stolen plant, which is a massive problem costing our members and the wider industry huge amounts of money, stress and lost revenue. We have over 1,900 members at the CPA and we feel it’s very important that the membership funds go back towards helping them. “Our £90,000 contribution to the work of NCATT is bringing immediate, tangible benefits to our members in preventing and detecting criminal activity and the recovery of illegally obtained plant-hire equipment,” he continued.

CIRCULAR ECONOMY BOOST FOR NORTH EAST AS MGL GROUP INVESTS IN CDE WASTE RECYCLING PLANT
O ne of the largest privately- owned civil engineering and demolition companies in the a strategic investment in a new construction and demolition (C&D) waste recycling plant, designed and engineered by wet processing experts CDE. In a region with increasingly limited primary sand and gravel resources, a long-term strategy to ensure a consistent supply of sustainably sourced construction materials is critical to meet increasing demand. North of England has announced To help meet the needs of the local market, family-owned and -operated business MGL Group has revealed plans for a new 160 tonnes per hour C&D waste recycling plant to be commissioned at the group’s recycling facility at Newburn, Newcastle upon Tyne. Newcastle contains very small pockets of known sand and gravel deposits, most of which are of low quality and are poorly located making their extraction unfeasible and the environmental impact of such activities unacceptable. Mark Davison, joint chief executive of MGL Group, said: “We aim to enhance our waste management capabilities by diverting high-value material from
landfill and returning that quality recycled sand and aggregate to good use in the construction industry. CDE impressed us with their expertise and deep understanding of our needs, instilling real confidence in us with their commitment to engineering a solution that will help us strengthen our own environmental commitments and deliver even greater social value for the North East.” Between 2019 and 2021, sales of recycled aggregates rose by approximately 21% across Tyne and Wear with a three-year average of 324,000 tonnes. Mark added: “Recycling and reusing materials will achieve significant carbon savings. It will help us to greatly reduce our overall carbon footprint and it will play an instrumental role on our pathway to achieve net zero emissions by 2050.” According to data from the 2019 Aggregate Minerals Survey for England and Wales, the North East consumed 7.5 million tonnes of primary aggregate compared to sales totalling 7.3 million tonnes, making the region a net importer of mineral resources. CDE business development manager, Mike Bibby said: “In a region where the availability of natural reserves is in decline, it is becoming increasingly
evident that we need to adapt a circular approach to C&D waste to channel back into the industry as much available material as possible. Yes, that means having to process more and more challenging material, however CDE’s proven waste recycling solutions are up to the task. The solution we have engineered for MGL Group will support the business to reduce its reliance on virgin sand and aggregate while ensuring a steady supply of materials to the industry, and it will help the business to produce those materials closer to source to minimise haulage costs.”

FILLING THE SKILLS GAP IN UK CONSTRUCTION
Training staff at Pearson TQ Construction Academy in Kent.
A s construction sites get smarter and infrastructure needs grow, the pressure’s on to find people with the right skills, right now. But for many in the industry, the gap between what’s needed and what’s available is becoming a real challenge. A recent report* highlights the scale of the problem, pointing to lost value when businesses can’t get the skills they need. The UK Government has responded with a £600 million investment into the sector, announced in March 2025, to help tackle the growing demand for housing and infrastructure. That’s good news - but only if the people are there to deliver it. CITB’s latest figures suggest we’ll need an extra 251,500 workers by 2028 just to keep up with output. That’s where targeted, high-quality training comes in. At Pearson TQ, we help employers close that skills gap - not with off-the- shelf training, but with practical, industry- relevant programmes designed around their specific needs. Whether you’re taking on new recruits or upskilling experienced operators, we’ll work with you to build a confident, capable workforce. Our Construction Academy in Swanley has been supporting Kent businesses for over 20 years. With our occupationally competent trainers, a classroom capacity for 40+ learners and a training area
spanning 20,000 m², we are a name you can trust. We’re proud to be an accredited CPCS test centre and an NPORS Accredited Training Provider (ATP), delivering more than 35 NOCN courses and over 40 NPORS qualifications. We can also deliver most of our courses nationwide, either at our customers’ premises or an alternative suitable location. From operating an excavator to first aid and health and safety management on site, our offer covers the skills that matter most to construction employers and employees.
Because closing the skills gap isn’t just about recruitment – it’s about investment, partnership, and getting the training right. *Pearson - Lost in Transition: Fixing the “Learn to Earn” Skills Gap
