INDUSTRY CORNER

FEBRUARY 2024 – LORD MUCK For the next issue, Rebecca had a good old chinwag with a bit of a social media celeb! Lord Muck! But we call him Kurt. A touchstone in the online community, he likes rescuing old machines and getting them running; saving them from becoming scrap. You’ll also find lots of useful content on machinery services and maintenance. Kurt knows what he’s talking about and shared his thoughts on social media, including the pitfalls of isolation it can breed. “Once upon a time, breaks were about getting together in the tearoom and chatting to one another. Genuine human interaction. It’s so important on a worksite and we’ve lost it. Think about it, new recruits coming on the scene aren’t communicating with those with experience like they were before. Sure, the old gruff geezer in the corner might look a bit daunting, but I bet he has so much to teach you that training alone can’t.

“There used to be a support network amongst teammates that I’m not sure remains. Before, in those little conversations, you’d be able to see who was struggling, help them out, you know? Now? Most people are just keeping it to themselves before they go back to their cab and sit on their own for however many hours more of that day. It’s a loss of community and communication.” Kurt also shared the value he hopes his content provides. “When I’m talking about a machine, it’s because I’m passionate about it. I don’t read off a sales brochure and I’m not there to sell machines. It’s conversational. I’m there to just let you know what I’m thinking, how I feel about it, how I see it, what I think is good and bad about it. “One thing I’ll never do is lie to my audience. I don’t just take anything that’s given to me.”
