Sustainability in the World of Plant: How is the Construction World Giving Back to the Planet? By Lorna Cowlin In a world where we are all actively conscious about the planet, the ecosystem and playing our part, what happens when it comes to the construction industry and plant machinery?

What does being sustainable even mean? Sustainability originates from the Latin verb “sustinere,” which means “to hold, support, or endure”, and the word “sustain” comes from the late 13th century verb “sustenen”, meaning “provide the necessities of life to”. This suggests that, regardless of context, sustaining something means to ‘keep and protect’. So, when in relation to a sustainable planet, that is exactly what we must do! We all play our part in helping the environment; for example, I no longer use makeup wipes in my routine anymore, unless I know they’re biodegradable. Instead, I use micellar water now to remove my make-up. But such as most things, if not everyone is doing their bit, no major difference will be made, or at least not quickly. However, this is a plant magazine, and we’re not here to talk about my makeup routine! So, that then begs the question…

Protecting our planet really does start with us! It’s becoming more apparent as time goes on that we all need to do our bit when it comes to building a more sustainable future. We hear that world a lot, “sustainable”… but do we actually know what it entails?
