KEYSTROKE MONTHLY THE

SEPTEMBER 2020 CELEBRATING THE ALL-STAR TEAM At Pop-A-Lock Lexington and Pop-A-Lock Louisville

When I was the head basketball coach at the University of Arkansas at Monticello, I learned the hard way that if you want to have a winning team, you have to recruit some great players. I was hired on as the head coach during the first week of August, and at that time, the previous coach had recruited only one player. Even with several good players returning from the previous year’s team, it wasn’t nearly enough to form the kind of team that competed for championships. It took a lot of hard work and some good luck to turn the program around, but after four years, we finally competed for the conference championship. I felt particularly lucky as a coach since most coaches don’t get the amount of time I did to rebuild a basketball program. Much like forming a championship-worthy basketball team, as a business owner I’ve realized that the best way to be successful is to recruit star employees and team players. Fortunately, I’ve been able to do just that here at Pop-A-Lock, and I would like to introduce you to a championship-worthy team of people. I’ll start with the general manager at the Lexington business, Shane Cochran. Shane has been with us for almost 20 years now, starting as a car door unlocking (CDU) technician before becoming a locksmith shortly thereafter. If there were ever an all-star team of locksmiths, Shane would be on it. He’s one of the best automotive locksmiths in Kentucky. Another incredible team member is Brandon Smith. He’s been a locksmith with us for three years, and he came to us with three previous years of locksmithing experience. He specializes in commercial and auto. Lastly, Clay Royce is our newest locksmith, having been with us for just nine months, but he’s already proving his value here at Pop-A-Lock. Along with our amazing locksmiths in Lexington are our CDU techs: Ron Gunnel, who has been with us for 13 years; Tim Hudgins, who has been with us for four years; and Neal Nolte, who has been with us for three years. Soon, they’ll be joined by Byron Brown, who is currently in CDU training. They’re all exceptional at their jobs. Finally, Dodie Wilburn is the Lexington office manager who has been keeping everything together for the past seven years. She’s a pro at her job. When she’s working, you won’t find a paper out of place.

In Louisville, I’m incredibly grateful for Richard and Paula Aresman, who have both made up the general management team there for 11 years. They are both all-stars at what they do and they’re one of the best management teams in the Pop-A-Lock system. Louisville also has an all-star team of CDU techs led by Cliff Collins and Eddie Abell, who have both been there for 10 years. They are both considered experts at unlocking cars and houses. John Gerry and Sam Croft are the newest members of the CDU team and both are doing great jobs. All of them deserve recognition for their hard work. Right now, we have by far the best team I’ve ever had in our entire 24-year history as a business. I’m incredibly fortunate to have found such awesome team members. They have made Pop-A-Lock Lexington and Pop-A-Lock Louisville look like a championship team.

DO WHAT YOU LOVE AND KEEP YOUR BODY MOVING How HIIT Benefits People of All Ages

According to Mayo Clinic research, HIIT workouts provide unique benefits to the body on a cellular level. The brief, vigorous exercises actually increase your metabolism and improve the health of mitochondria, the powerhouses that create energy within the cells. By energizing your cells, you can actually reverse the decline in muscle health that occurs as people age. Energizing cells through HIIT benefits everyone, but these workouts can be of particular benefit to those over age 65. Seniors experience diminishing returns on energy produced by their bodies at a cellular level, and HIIT has been shown to reverse that process even in advanced age. HIIT workouts also have many other advantages for people of all ages. The exercises don’t necessarily require any equipment, and you can even see results from adding high-intensity intervals to daily walks. Those with health conditions,

such as diabetes and heart disease, can still participate in HIIT. In fact, Healthline reports that HIIT workouts can reduce heart rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar. However, the biggest draw to HIIT exercises is just how much of a timesaver they are. A few minutes of high-intensity movement can be just as beneficial as roughly 45 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise. You can incorporate HIIT exercises into whatever activities you enjoy, such as walking, cardio exercises, and strength training. If you’re affected by weak joints, you can incorporate HIIT into lower impact exercises, such as swimming or cycling. If you want to feel energized while doing the things you love, then HIIT just might be something you want to try. Just remember to keep a steady pace and don’t overdo it!

High-intensity interval training (HIIT) is one of the best ways to burn fat, build muscle, and give yourself a better chance at a longer, healthier life. HIIT workouts are characterized by brief periods (30 seconds to a few minutes) of high-intensity exercise, followed by periods of low- or moderate-intensity exercise. However, what makes these workouts truly remarkable is just how much they can benefit people in every age group.

Where Most People Find ‘The One’

This Entrepreneur Found Her Niche

“Always the bridesmaid and never the bride.” It takes a truly savvy entrepreneur to turn such an age-old cliche into a profitable business, but that’s exactly where Jen Glantz, founder of Bridesmaid for Hire, found her niche. By the time she reached her early 20s, Glantz had been a bridesmaid in several of her friends’ weddings and was beginning to embody the always-a-bridesmaid stereotype. However, instead of letting it get her down, she sensed an opportunity. She had experience writing speeches, repairing dresses, and consoling stressed-out brides — why not share it with wedding parties that needed it and make some money in the process? In 2014, Bridesmaid for Hire started with a Craigslist ad. It could have easily slid under the radar unnoticed, but Glantz put her poetry degree to good use and crafted a funny, heartfelt description of the services she was offering. Within two days, she had over 250 parties who wanted to hire her. Since then, Glantz and her team have provided their services for over 150 weddings and been featured on over 500 media outlets.

describe themselves as friendless, and many say they don’t even have

acquaintances. That’s why when their big wedding day comes, they desperately need someone there to support them, or even just to round out wedding photos.

Glantz and her team provide a number of services for

wedding parties, including wedding planning help, drama patrol, advice, and even just shoulders to lean on through bachelorette parties, bridal showers, and weddings, all as a part of their full-on bridesmaid for hire services. On the other hand, brides can bring in a wedding coordinator from Bridesmaids for Hire, just for the big day. Oftentimes, one of the most important parts of starting a business is finding the right niche. Although the COVID-19 pandemic has greatly affected wedding planners and venues, people still want to get married, and they won’t stop needing support and advice for their big day.

Glantz was smart when she picked millennials as her target demographic. According to the New York Post, 27% of millennials

GETTING INTO YOUR LOCKED CAR ISN’T A DIY PROJECT

Why It’s Best to Call the Experts

When we find ourselves in a pickle — like being locked out of our own car — many of us instinctively will try to find a way out to avoid a threat to our bank account. While that instinct to avoid spending money is a good one, you might actually end up costing yourself more, financially and otherwise, by trying to get into your locked car by yourself. Here are a few reasons you should always call a locksmith to get back into your car. IT’S ULTIMATELY CHEAPER While you might think a wire coat hanger and a little elbow grease might get you out of your locked car conundrum for free, a lot can go wrong in this scenario. At the very best, you risk scratching the paint on your car, which could cost you a few hundred dollars to repair. At the very worst, you risk breaking a window, which is a much larger bill. To avoid these damages all together, it’s better to just call in the experts. IT’S SAFER Most people don’t know how to break into a car quickly and efficiently, which means they risk injuring themselves when they try. If you jerk your body the wrong way trying to ram an object into the small gap around your car window, you could easily pull a muscle. At the same time, say you break your car window, either accidentally, or (for some

unknown reason) on purpose. That could lead to serious cuts involving a visit to the hospital, some stitches, and a pricey bill.

IT’S LESS SUSPICIOUS Are you doing anything illegal by trying to break into your own car? No. Does it look like you’re doing something illegal? You bet. While you might be able to explain yourself to a suspicious law enforcement officer who happens to catch you with a coat hanger, is that really the kind of interaction you want to deal with? Absolutely not. When it comes down to it, getting a car door unlocking technician on the scene just makes the most sense when you’ve locked yourself out of your car. So, if it ever happens to you, call your local Pop- A-Lock, and we’ll be there before you even have time to worry.

SPOTLIGHTING SAM CROFT

Pop-A-Lock’s Employee of the Month

Sam is one of the newest all-star additions to the Pop-A-Lock team, having worked with us as a car door unlocking technician for around 3–4 months. During that time, he’s already proven that incredible customer service and a determination to learn new skills can go a long way. Sam joined our team after learning his fair share of skills as an auto mechanic. He wanted to learn something new, so he applied to be a CDU tech with us. The rest is history. In addition to his skills as an auto mechanic, he also brings incredible customer service skills from his days at Chick-fil-A. No matter the case, Sam knows how to leave his customers with a smile.

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE 21ST NIGHT OF SEPTEMBER? 4 Decades of Earth, Wind & Fire’s ‘September’

In 1978, Maurice White of the band Earth, Wind & Fire first asked this question in the song “September,” a funky disco song that quickly topped the charts. While disco may be dead today, “September”

the songwriting process, Willis begged to change the phrase to real words. At the final vocal session, Willis finally demanded to know what ba-dee-ya meant. White replied, “Who cares?” “I learned my greatest lesson ever in songwriting from him,” Willis recalled in a 2014 interview with NPR, “which was never let the lyric get in the way of the groove.” The groove is why “September” has stood the test of time, right from that very first lyric. For decades, people have asked Willis and members of the band about the significance of Sept. 21. As it turns out, there isn’t much beyond the sound. “We went through all the dates: ‘Do you remember the first, the second, the third, the fourth …’ and the one that just felt the best was the 21st,” Willis explained.

certainly isn’t. The song is still featured in movies, TV shows, and wedding playlists. On Sept. 21, 2019, the funk hit was streamed over 2.5 million times. It’s no wonder that the Los Angeles City Council declared Sept. 21 Earth, Wind & Fire Day. The story behind “September” is almost as enduring as the song itself. It was co-written by White and Allee Willis, who eventually became a Grammy-winning songwriter and Tony nominee. But before any of that, Willis was a struggling songwriter in Los Angeles living off food stamps. When White reached out and asked Willis to help write the next Earth, Wind & Fire hit, it was truly her big break.

White and Willis proved to be excellent songwriting partners, but they clashed over one key element of the song: the nonsensical phrase “ba-dee-ya,” which White included in the chorus. Throughout

The truth is that nothing happened on the 21st night of September — except a whole lot of dancing.
