Warren B. Spraggins 1939-2021 Retired Professional Basketball Player, Business Owner, Youth Counselor Retired pro bas-

Spraggins was a youth counselor with the Harlem YMCA-Youth Division, Harlem Youth Unlimited, and a Project Manager for the Patterson Task Force-Street Academy High School Dropouts. He worked with the Harlow Corporation in New York and Texas, where children of all ages and adults fur- thered their education. Before moving back to Virginia, Spraggins worked with the New York City Board of Education as a substitute counselor and teacher. In 2008, VUU inducted Spraggins into the Virginia Union Hall of Fame, where his jersey number "30" was retired. He was also inducted into the Brooklyn Hall of Fame and the Rucker Professionals Hall of Fame. Brother Bruce Spraggins was preceded in death by his two brothers, Benja- min L. Spraggins Jr. and Sherman R. Spraggins. He is survived by his wife, Marilyn; his son, Darrell (Mary); three grandchildren, Darrell Jimmerson, Jr (Tiffany), TaMarra Jimmerson (Rashon), and Storie Veihl (Larry); six great-grand- children, Noah, Chole', Journee, Isaiah, Ni'Ray, and Chase; nieces and nephews; longtime friends, VUU teammates and classmates, and the 1957 graduating class of Bruton Heights. education in 1973 from Elizabeth City State University. While in college in 1968, U.S. Air Force drafted Spauld- ing. He served his country with pride and later in the reserves with the local National Guard Unit 514th M.P. He served in the military for more than twenty-five years. After active duty ser- vice in Air Force, Spaulding worked in the Edgecombe County school system as an educator for nearly thirty years. He was a businessman and owner of Spaulding Cleaning Service for almost forty years. Spaulding was a member of the Greenville (N.C.) Alumni Chapter. He was also a member of the Sycamore Hill Missionary Baptist Church of Green- ville, NC, where he served faithfully on the Men’s Usher Board and Trustee Board. He also was a member of the North Carolina Association of Educa- tors and the National Association of American Veterans. “Mac” was always willing to help others in need and pro- vide advice whenever solicited. He was devoted to his wife and children. He loved participating in family and church activities. He was a kind and gentle person who always put his family first. Brother Lesley Spaulding is sur- vived by his wife, Gloria (née Bowman) Spaulding; two daughters, Sharnelle (Julian) Phifer, Monica (James) Top- ping; one son, Darryl (Tasha) Spaulding; one sister, Marion Spaulding-Webb; six grandchildren, Zyonna Spaulding, Gabrielle Phifer, Jazzmin Spaulding, Jaylah Spaulding, Aaron Phifer, and Quinn Topping; and a host of close relatives, friends, colleagues, and former students.

peacefully entered the Chapter Invisible on September 12, 2021, at the Haven Residential Home in Charles City, VA, at age 82. Warren Bruce Spraggins was born on August 31, 1939, to the late Benjamin L. Spraggins Sr. and Susie Josephine Spraggins. After graduating in 1957 from Bruton Heights School, Spraggins earned a bas- ketball scholarship to historic Virginia Union University (VUU) in Richmond, VA. Spraggins scored over 1,500 points during his three-year career playing for the VUU Panthers; Spraggins aver- aged 24.3 points per game. He scored a career-high 54 points against Saint Paul's College in the 1959-60 season. Spraggins was a first-team All-CIAA star and led the NCAA Small College listing as the top scorer. The Philadelphia Warriors franchise of the National Basketball Associa- tion (NBA) drafted Spraggins, a small forward, in the fifth round of the 1961 NBA Draft but he signed with the Washington Tapers of the American Basketball League. Spraggins' profes- sional basketball career lasted ten years from 1961 to 1971, playing in three dif- ferent leagues, the American Basketball League, the Continental Basketball As- sociation, and the American Basketball Association (ABA). During the 1967-68 season, Spraggins averaged 12 points per game playing for the New Jersey Americans of the ABA. After retiring from professional bas- ketball, Spraggins was the co-owner of Appletown Sporting Goods in Harlem, NY. He worked with youth programs under the New York City Housing
