Next Generation Science Standards
• Science enables students to think critically about the physical world through experimentation, questioning, and problem solving. • Steps to Literacy is proud to offer science-based collections to support the needs of teachers across the country. • These collections are divided into two types: Next Generation Science Standards for grades K-5, and STEAM for grades K-6.
Your solution to science coverage in the classroom!
Our collections were carefully curated by educators to support the K-5 implementation of the NGSS into your classroom literacy block or science classroom. Titles in the following grade-level NGSS collections were selected for one or more of the following reasons:
NGSS collection offerings include classroom libraries organized by grade, topic, and reading level with bins and labels. A standards tip sheet will be included in the libraries for

teachers’ quick reference when writing lesson plans.
The collections utilize vocabulary, visuals, and high interest topics, acting as building blocks for students as they progress through each grade
Why Next Generation Science Standards?
The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) were created in response to an increased effort by teachers to include science topics in their curriculum. Currently, about 40% of teachers teach “real-world applications of science,”* meaning most science instruction may not be applicable to students' future endeavers. The Next Generation Science Standards were developed through a collaborative, state-led process based on the National Research Council’s A Framework for K-12 Science Education. The goal of NGSS is to help students use science to make sense of real-world phenomena and use engineering to solve problems.
How are the National Science Standards Implemented?
Every NGSS standard has three dimensions: • Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCIs) • Crosscutting Concepts • Scientific and Engineering Practices
Three-dimensional learning allows students to explore, examine, and explain how phenomena occur and strategize solutions in an integrative approach. Students explain phenomena by developing and applying the Disciplinary Core Ideas and Crosscutting Concepts through use of the Scientific and Engineering Practices. The NGSS combines all three dimensions to create a coherent learning process and build on the knowledge acquired in each grade.
