U11 National Biathle Christo Chilton and Zac Crowther

Brighton Bike Ride

Ahimsa Ravi successfully completed a fundraising bike ride to Brighton, raising almost £800 for a girls’ orphanage in Pakistan. He did very well and never complained about the slopes he had to endure. The route was essentially the same one used by the Heart Foundation for their charity ride in the Summer.

Christo Chilton and Zac Crowther became U1 Biathle champions, 1st and 2nd respectively.

The fifteenth Thwaites Bach Competition was held in the Old Library in late September and Alasdair Howell’s impressive performance of the Partita No 1 in B flat BWV 825 won the competition. Alasdair then participated in the fifth Rosalyn Tureck International Bach competition in New York in November. He played Partita No.1 in B-flat and Shostakovich Prelude and Fugue in D major and was chosen as one of the finalists - he received “Honourable Mention”. Alasdair went on to win the College piano competition held in February, and in April he gave a recital in preparation for his performance with the internationally renowned pianist Lang Lang to a sold-out audience at the Royal Albert Hall. Lang Lang nominated Alasdair as a potential future star of classical music in the CNN documentary ‘Ones to Watch’.

Alexandre Gruffat won his first orange ball regional tennis tournament in February and also played in his first national tournament. He finished in second place which was a remarkable achievement as he only expected to reach the qualifying round! In addition, Alexandre represented Surrey U10’s in the

regional finals in Sunderland. He and his teammates played exceptionally well defeating Hertfordshire in the final round to become National County Champions. In December, John Pedersen auditioned for the National Children’s Orchestra of United Kingdom. Playing his violin, John impressed the judging panel and was offered a place both in the NCO and a regional orchestra. Jai Singh Chaturvedi qualified for the 4th year in a row to play in the finals of the London Junior Chess Championships back in December at the University of Westminster in Harrow.

Lucas Cunningham was our ‘Headmaster for the day’ on Friday 24 June. He read in, handed out certificates and gave the boys five minutes extra playtime. In addition he also chose the menu for lunch and later on in the day Lucas had a tour of some of the other parts of the College (where he is not normally allowed) including the Master’s Snooker room!
