APRIL 2024

Ensure Your Legacy Motivation for a Healthy Life

Motivated by the love and support of my family, I am inspired every day to pursue a higher quality of life through mindful choices and regular exercise. The infectious energy of my 11-year-old daughter serves as a constant reminder of the importance of prioritizing my health; I strive to be around her for as long as possible. World Health Day provides an opportunity to promote healthy living practices in a society faced with many diverse health challenges. As we celebrate this day, we are reminded of the fundamental right to good health and well-being that everyone deserves. World Health Day is celebrated on April 7 under the sponsorship of the World Health Organization. The day is observed annually and draws attention to specific health topics of concern to people worldwide. Although World Health Day is only celebrated one day of the year, I use it as a reminder to prioritize healthy living daily. My nutrition journey began long ago, as I focused on maintaining a balanced lifestyle and keeping everything in moderation. Every year, I adjust my diet, gradually reducing certain unhealthy indulgences. As I’ve aged, my dietary preferences have evolved, which has been a challenge for me. With hamburgers and pizza turning into rare treats, enjoying them once a week has brought me many positive changes. Even ice cream has become an occasional delight as I continue focusing on moderation and healthier alternatives. Incorporating nutrient-rich options like asparagus, spinach, and peppers has become a staple in my efforts to make mindful dietary choices. While my love for steak remains, I have scaled back to only having it once a month. Fish, particularly salmon, has become a weekly highlight for me, replacing a portion of my red meat

intake. Practicing healthy portion control for overall wellness has also helped in many areas. I have challenged myself to limit my intake of french fries, which are my most guilty pleasure! Regarding fitness, I have been taking it one day at a time as I recover from a recent femur injury. Before the injury, my exercise of choice was cycling outdoors for the fresh air and Peloton workouts. Additionally, integrating Pilates into my routine once a week has proven to be a transformative experience, enhancing my strength and alleviating back discomfort since I began last summer. I emphasize the importance of sun protection, as it often goes overlooked; I urge others to prioritize sunscreen application and protective clothing. Safeguarding your skin against harmful UV rays is imperative to maintaining radiant and healthy skin. Many underestimate the power of maintaining healthy habits; they can transform your everyday lifestyle. Some changes I have seen while practicing healthy living include increased energy, reduced stress, and improved sleep patterns. When implementing these habits, you will also see a decrease in anxiety and depression while simultaneously enhancing your overall mood. Integrating healthy habits into daily life can lead to many positive changes. Beyond this day of celebration and reflection, let us continue to create a healthier

and more prosperous world. With each small step toward better health, we move closer to achieving a life that ensures longevity. – Gary L. Medlin, Esq.

Joke’s on You! THE HISTORY OF APRIL FOOLS’ DAY Have you ever wondered why we celebrate April Fools’ Day every April 1 with silly pranks and whimsical tricks? April Fools’ originated in France during the 16th century when the country switched from the Julian calendar to the Gregorian calendar. The change moved the new year from the end of March to Jan. 1. The shocking part is that not everyone was aware of the change. Those who continued celebrating New Year’s Day on April 1 were mocked, labeled as “April Fools,” and subjected to pranks. These pranks included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as “poisson d’avril” (April fish), said to symbolize a young, easily caught fish or a gullible person. Historians have also linked April Fools’ Day to festivals such as Hilaria (Latin for joyful), which was celebrated in ancient Rome at the end of March by followers of the cult of Cybele.

legend of Isis, Osiris, and Seth. There’s also speculation that April Fools’ Day was tied to the vernal equinox, or the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere, when Mother Nature fooled people with changing, unpredictable weather. Regardless of its origin, April Fools’ Day has become a worldwide tradition with links from the past. Today, April Fools’ Day means playing pranks and tricks on friends and family. People have gone to great lengths to create elaborate April Fools’ Day hoaxes. Newspapers, radio and TV stations, and websites have participated in the April 1 tradition of reporting outrageous fictional claims to fool their audiences.

It involved people dressing up in disguises and mocking fellow citizens and magistrates and was said to be inspired by the Egyptian

On the Road to Responsibility STEER CLEAR OF DWIS

Looking to steer clear of a DWI in Texas? The foremost advice is simple: refrain from drinking and driving altogether. However, if you do choose to consume alcohol when out, responsibility is critical. Here are some helpful tips that can save you lots of trouble. Tips for Avoiding a DWI in Texas A helpful guideline is to limit yourself to no more than one drink per hour. For instance, for a 150-pound male, one drink — defined as a 12-ounce regular beer or a mixed drink containing one shot of approximately 80 proof alcohol — contributes to a 0.02 alcohol concentration. The amount of alcohol needed to reach the same concentration varies depending on body weight, with heavier individuals requiring more. The body metabolizes alcohol at a rate of about one drink per hour, though this rate may vary. By following this pace of consumption, you’re less likely to become intoxicated, which is characterized by impaired mental or physical faculties or a blood alcohol concentration over 0.08.

with alcohol slows its absorption, resulting in a lower peak concentration. You should go for heavy or fried foods, which absorb more alcohol and effectively delay absorption. Spacing out alcohol consumption over time is also very helpful. Allow your body adequate time to metabolize the alcohol before driving. This can significantly reduce the risk of a DWI. Finally, alternative transportation options such as Uber, Lyft, taxi services, or a designated driver should be considered. The designated driver must abstain from drinking entirely, as even minimal alcohol consumption can impair driving ability. These strategies ensure everyone’s safety on the road. Overall, dodging a DWI in Texas boils down to one straightforward rule: Do not drink and drive! Drinking and driving pose a massive danger to all individuals and society at large, making it an irresponsible choice. If you or a loved one are facing a DWI charge, call us today to see how we can help.

Another beneficial tactic is to eat food while drinking. Consuming food simultaneously

4. Protective Pup Takes a Bullet for His Owner — And Survives!

In a heartwarming tale of courage and resilience, a pit bull named Kilo defied the odds after being shot in the head while bravely protecting his owner. The incident unfolded when an intruder invaded Kilo’s home. In a shocking turn of events, Kilo’s instinct to shield his owner led to a life-threatening injury, but “Super Pitty” survived, capturing many hearts, too. One Saturday evening 12 years ago on Staten Island, a gunman posing as a FedEx deliveryman rang the doorbell of Kilo’s home. He didn’t wait long before he pushed his way into the apartment. Kilo’s human, Justin Becker, told CBS, “He barged in. My first reaction after seeing the gun was to push him out, so I pushed him to the door.” Becker’s girlfriend, Nicole Percoco, had been holding Kilo during this encounter and let him go. Kilo jumped into action, fighting back against the invader, unfortunately getting shot in the fight. Luckily, the bullet just missed Kilo’s skull, entering and exiting right under his ears, said Dr. Gregory L. Panarello, the medical director of South Shore Animal Hospital. After a 40-minute surgery to remove bullet fragments, he was patched up and even given a superhero insignia on his bandage. Three days later, Kilo was up and going on every dog’s favorite pastime: walkies. Kilo’s story is a powerful reminder of the indomitable spirit of canine companions and the strength of their love for us. Even 12 years later, Super Pitty Kilo’s story still spreads love and happiness. Give your pet an extra cuddle tonight so they know just how much you love them!
