Changing climate drivers and responses in the environment or ecosystem varies in the different Arctic regions, and it is therefore important to address both regional systems as well as connectivity on Pan-Arctic scales. The Nansen Legacy project (2018-2024) focuses on a multidisciplinary research effort on the northern Barents Sea shelf and the adjacent Arctic Basin (https://arvenetternansen.com/). The Barents Sea has experienced substantial warming since the 1980s, with trends of sea ice decline in summer and winter, and an ‘Atlantification’ of both the physical environment and biological community. To address these changes, the Nansen Legacy is a large and multidisciplinary research project providing integrated scientific knowledge on the rapidly changing marine climate and ecosystems of the Barents Sea. Because the Barents Sea is one of the inflow shelves into the Arctic Ocean, questions remain on how changes in the Barents Sea connect to and impact other Arctic regions. Furthermore, can we learn from regional observations in the Barents Sea to better understand changes occurring on a Pan-Arctic scale? The Nansen Legacy project will provide an arena for regional and Pan-Arctic discussion during its international symposium, Towards a new Arctic Ocean: past, present, and future, to be held in Tromsø, Norway in November 2023 (www.nansenlegacy-symposium.com). We will facilitate interdisciplinary discussions with regional focus, and Pan-Arctic connections with disciplinary focus. We welcome your participation! In addition to symposium specifics, synthetic details about the Nansen Legacy project will be presented in this poster.
