Support Services is responsible for the management of investigations, youth services and business services.
Accomplishments
Public Safety expanded its ability to provide safety training to members of the community by creating the position of Threat Mitigation Officer. This sworn police officer will conduct the Department’s Violent Intruder Response Training, which has already provided training to hundreds of schools, houses of worship, and businesses in the City of Irvine. This officer will also respond to requests to conduct site inspections, with the goal of assisting management personnel in making positive safety changes to a building or work area. Public Safety embarked on several technology projects in the past year. One key project is the search for a vendor for the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD) and Records Management Systems (RMS), which will result in a modern, fully integrated, single point entry system. A new CAD/RMS system will increase operational efficiency and will enhance the Department’s ability to provide professional police services now and into the future. The new system will also be NIBRS (National Incident Based Reporting System) compliant. Effective January 1, 2021, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) will require police agencies to report crime data via NIBRS and will replace the current Uniform Crime Report (UCR). NIBRS will become the law enforcement standard for quantifying crime throughout the nation and will serve as a tool for developing law enforcement responses to crime. Another key technology project under way is the expansion of online crime reporting. Residents now have the ability to report a wide range of crimes using an easy online system accessed through irvinepd.org. This is one option for residents wishing to report crimes such as mail theft, package theft and more. An in-person report is still available if that is the resident’s preference. In an effort to enhance transparency, the Irvine Police Department is also in the process of offering real-time crime mapping online. Public Safety’s Communications Bureau partnered with the Sheriff’s Department and agencies throughout the county in the implementation of Text-to-9-1-1. This lifesaving service is now available to all residents in the County. Irvine’s Dispatch center is now accepting text messages from those in need of emergency aid. Outreach to the community continues to be at the forefront of our efforts. Public Safety hosted dozens of events in the last year with the aim of strengthening our partnership with the community. These events included our signature Irvine Police Department Open House, in which we invite members of the community to the Civic Center for a day of fun and education. We hosted National Night Out events at three locations, one in each of our geographic policing areas and other events including community safety meetings, traffic safety meetings, Coffee with a Cop and our first Pizza with a Cop event. We also continued our partnership with Special Olympics of Southern California through events such as Tip-A-Cop, Cop on a Rooftop, and the Law Enforcement Torch Run.
