““It is a secret, we don’t tell anyone what it is, we don’t sell it anymore because people were on-selling the salt and then it became almost like a production, so we stopped selling it individually and we only use it in the shop.” - Bellerive Bakehouse owner Linda Free on her famous season salt.”
With Tasmania’s borders finally opening up for the summer holidays, Crosby is preparing for increased trade courtesy of Wotif, one of the country’s most popular travel search engines.“I’m almost certain that it’s going happen, it’ll be more of an issue if we can keep up or not.”Tasmania had two other top 10 nominations – with Bellerive’s Cripps Bakehouse ranked the fifth best hot chips in the country and Cradle Mountain and Freycinet coming in fifth and 10th in the National Park category. For Bellerive Bakehouse owner Linda Free, the recognition as boasting Tasmania’s best chips was unexpected, but the reasons weren’t. “It was a bit of a shock actually, because we didn’t actually even know we were up for a nomination,” Free said. “We heard it being spoken about it on the [Mick] Molloy radio program, they didn’t actually mention us as such, but they talked about the 10 best chips in Australia, so we sort of realised how
big it was after we heard people talking about it. “It was great to be recognised. “We use McCain’s chips, always have, and we’ve got a really good relationship with McCain’s. Their rep comes in regularly and checks on us to make sure the chips are okay. “We use a specific 10mm chip, we don’t go any bigger or any smaller and really the secret is our season salt. That’s what everyone comes in here for. “It is a secret, we don’t tell anyone what it is, we don’t sell it anymore because people were on- selling the salt and then it became almost like a production, so we stopped selling it individually and we only use it in the shop.” The Wotif uniquely awards had several other categories, with Hobart’s St J’s Deli grabbing the title of Tasmania’s best jaffle, Derwent Bridge Wilderness Hotel named the state’s best country pub and Aspect Tamar Valley Resort landing the best hotel pool crown.
