is what salvation means. Isvit not glor ious? But even that is not all. 6. We are saved “ to an inheritance incorruptible and undeiiled and that fadeth not away, reserved in Heaven for you who are kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation ready to be revealed in the last time” (1 Pet. 1:4-5). Stop and take that in. I passed a home one day where a young couple lived. He is an heir to many millions, and she an heiress of anywhere from twenty to one hundred millions. As we passed a friend said to me, “ Do you know who lives there?” “ Yes..”. “ And,” continued he, “ he married so and so.” “ Yes,” my friend then said, “ I guess they have enough.” “ Yes, but listen, it is nothing to what we have, to what will be ours a little ways ahead;^an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled, and that fadeth not away.” “ Heirs of God, and joint heirs with Jesus Christ” (Rom. 8:17). Is not that wonderful? Oh, salvation, is it not a glorious thing? Saved from all guilt, saved from God’s displeasure, saved from the condemna tion of our own conscience, saved from the power of sin, saved from the future judgment, and saved to peace, and joy, saved for a pure and useful and holy life, saved to God’s favor, saved to Sonship, saved to eternal life, saved to an inheritance incorruptible and unde filed and that fadeth not away. Is not that word “ saved” a great word? A tremendous word? A glorious word? A stupendous word? The best part of it is that any man or woman here can be saved tonight. IV. How We Are Saved. We come then to the last question, How are we saved? We do not need to spend much time on that, it is so sim ple. Look at the text, “ By grace are ye saved, through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God.” 1. We are Saved by Grace. That is to say, salvation is a free

gift. You do not have to work for it, you do not have to do anything small or great to deserve it, you are saved by grace, “Not of works, lest any man should boast” (Eph. 1 :9). Salvation is a free gift, therefore anybody can have it. The poor can have it just as well as the rich, and a good many more of the poor get it than of the rich. The good things of this world the poor can not get. Good food, good clothes, good homes, are not for them. The land that God gave to all men is gobbled up by the few. The water is gobbled up, and even the very air is being gobbled up. The poor do not get good air, though they get more out here than they do in most places. But even out here they do not get as much as they ought to have. But thank God, the very best thing, Salvation, cannot be gobbled up by the rich, “ To the poor the Gospel is preached.” Salvation is for the poorest. It is for the vilest also, as well as for the best. It is for the man in the penitentiary as well as for the man in the college. If we had to do anything to deserve it, none of us could get it; but as it is all of grace we can all have it if we will. Last Sunday night as I was leaving the building, I was called to speak to a man under neath yonder gallery. I stepped up to him and said, “Why do you not accept Christ?” The man replied, “ Dr. Torrey, you know my reputation better than any other man in this city.” I replied, “ I do not care for your reputation, I do not care for what you have been, ‘This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, even the chief’.” A poor ragged wretch said to me one night, that salvation was not for him. But he forgot that “ We are saved by grace.” Now remember that; do not ever forget it; “We are saved by grace.” No one can get salvation by his merits. Any man who tries to get
