Jews Helping Jews Patriarch Phillip Kamese, of Jerusa lem, recently sent an appeal in the name of the Palestinian Jews to the Pope in Rome asking that he use his influence upon the Polish Catholics to stop the pogroms and persecutions against the Jews. The Jews all over the world have not left one stone unturned in trying to help their Jewish brethren in Poland who have been threatened with entire annihilation. Borne Would Block Jews The Romanist Cardinal Mercier has become honorary president of the so- called “ Friends of the Holy Land,’ ’ an organization to block the passage of Palestine into Jewish hands. From Judaism to Romanism The Jews of Hungary are ,said to be abandoning Judaism for Catholicism in considerable numbers, fearing the con sequences to Jewry which a reaction from Bolshevism is likely to bring. A Pioneer of Zionism A George Eliot chair of English Lit erature has been suggested by a writer in the Jewish Chronicle for the new Hebrew University at Jerusalem. George Eliot (Mary Ann Evans) was born November 22nd, 1819, and many Jews are celebrating her centennial. She is counted one of the Gentile pio neers of Zionism. A Problem in Palestine Rumors have been going around among the Jews with regard to the sacred places in Jerusalem. They have been told that Roman Catholics greatly object to the Jews possessing and con trolling Jerusalem on account of the
sacred localities. The Mohammedans have also protested on the same grounds, saying that they, too, have their shrines in Jerusalem. Prominent Jews have been puzzled as to the solu tion of these problems because the one thing essential to the Jewish welfare in Palestine is to live in peace with their neighbors, the Arabs, Syrians, Turks and others. Now comes the well-known poet and writer Israel Zangwill, of Lon don, with his proposition concerning this matter, namely, that all the sacred places of Christians should be given into the hands of the Jewish Christians for safe keeping. Trying to Discredit Christianity An amazing Jewish propaganda in American universities is being conduct ed by the Jewish Chautauqua Society. It reveals the energy and subtlety of the liberal element of Jews in this country. A special effort is made to reach the in tellectual leadership of the country and give Jewish interpretations of English literature as related to and touching Jewish life, and especially to counteract genuine Christian interpretations of the Scriptures by the subtle presentation of Jewish teachings of the Messiah, Christianity, the Pharisees, the Talmud, etc. Prominent lecturers of rabbinical stamp and university education draw large audiences of our teachers and youth to hear what Jews have to say on burning questions of the day regarding the Word of God. It is a part of a uni ted Jewish effort to discredit Christian ity and exalt Judaism.
