WATER We use water for numerous activities in the produc- tion process, including sanitising the cellar, washing equipment and preparing for plant protection oper- ations in the vineyard. Water withdrawal is linked to seasonal conditions and above all to the quantity of grapes processed. The decision not to irrigate (even when the Franciacorta Production Code would allow it) keeps water con- sumption down even in the driest years. Discharge from the vinification facility, amounting to 50% of the total discharge, is treated before being released into the sewage system. The rest of the effluent, which is attributable to water consumption by the head office and warehouse, does not need any specific treat - ment, as stipulated by the relevant regulations.

ENERGY CONSUMPTION Most of the energy we consume is to operate the machinery in the vinification cellar and keep it cool. We use energy from the national grid and from our own solar PV system. In 2021, the total energy consumption of Guido Berlucchi was 9764 GJ, less than the previous year, partly due to the reduction in the volume of wine made following the poor harvest in 2019, and partly due to the health emergency which led to us scaling down activities in some areas.

Part of the water withdrawn (in 2021 about 13%) is do- nated to the village parish to irrigate the football field.

The figure for water withdrawn remains more or less constant between 2020 and 2021. The metering system was refined in 2021, enabling a more pre - cise breakdown between the figure of water “con - sumed” (i.e. water for irrigating green areas) and “discharged” (i.e. water going to the sewage system), which is why the figures show an increase of ap - proximately 500 cubic metres of water consumed compared to 2020.

In addition to the production of renewable energy, multiple processes were designed to recover as much of the energy used as possible, in some stages up to 80%.

EMISSIONS Emissions were calculated on the basis of the findings of the Ita.Ca. ® project using the data calculated for ISO 14064 certification and the relevant emission factors, with the exception of the market-based (Scope 2) emissions.

In 2021, our emissions amounted to 1,262.1 metric tons of CO 2 equivalent (location-based).
