God know we’re coming?” He evidentally had a good spiritual foundation. SEEKING STRENGTH An artist once painted an award-win ning picture of a sailor kneeling by the side of his bed. The title was, “Weak ness in Strength.” The woman explained that the serviceman was her father. During these times of weakness he went to his knees to pray. No wonder people were intrigued by the picture. As a be liever, when one prays, he is actually confessing his inabilities and calling upon the Lord for His help. So often we fail to do this because of pride. Some times God has to drive us to our knees through an illness or some disappoint ment. Abraham Lincoln once told his generals, “Gentlemen, I have often re sorted to prayer for l have readily real ized that there is nowhere else to go.” All men need God’s help, first of all for salvation. Only the Lord can deliver us from the bondage and weight of our sins. He alone provides true peace, joy and satisfaction in life. We have re cited it often, but again today as believ ers, remember, “In everything by prayer and supplication with, thanksgiving, let your requests be made known unto God, and the peace of God, which passeth all understanding shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”
FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH While it happened many years ago, old time mariners remember the tragic fire that broke out on a passenger ship travelling from Detroit, Michigan to Buffalo, New York. A t the helm was a young seaman by the name of John Maynard. Those present recorded for history the dramatic words of the cap tain from the deck below as he shouted through the speaking tube, “John May nard, our only chance is to make a dash for the shore. Can you hang on until we run her aground?" Although fright ened he answered bravely, “With the help of God, I ’ll try, sir." Five minutes later, the flames of fire enveloped the wheel house, and John Maynard’s hands were already blistered and his hair singed. In those last moments the cap tain again shouted, “Are you there John Maynard? Can you hang on for another minute or more?” Although in pain, and knowing his demise was certain, came the faithful reply in a yet feeble voice, "Aye, aye sir, with the help of God, I ’ll try.” That ill-fated vessel was run aground with the lives of every man, woman and child spared except for John Maynard. When the gutted skip could finally be entered, they found his body slumped over the burning helm. Here was a sailor who was faithful unto death. In this modern day, the Lord may never ask us to give up our lives through the faithful performance of His tasks set before us. He does, however, expect every one of us to be faithful, no mat ter what our age, circumstances, or sta tion in life. Now, to be faithful means to know the precepts and principles of God’s Word and to proclaim these eter nal truths wherever we go. As far as Christian service is concerned, listen to our Saviour's blessed words, “Be thou faithful unto death and I will give thee a crown of life." * * * The end never really justifies the mean ness. * * * Love needs no rival to slay it, for neglect will do this automatically. The best time to hold on is the time when most people let loose. * * * Discouragement is actually faith in the devil. 29
