Release Liners To Reach $162B The global release liners market size is expected to reach $162.4 bil- lion by 2030, according to a new study from Research and Markets. According to the study, the market for release liners is expected to rise due to manufacturers using emerg- ing technology developments to create next-generation release liners for various developing industries. Supplier Collaboration For instance, in May 2022, Mondi certified its base paper for its full line of glassine-based release lin- ers. By switching to certified base paper, Mondi is said to be enhanc- ing traceability and collaborating with suppliers who responsibly manage forests in keeping with its objective to ensure zero deforesta- tion throughout its supply chain.

Packaging Science Ushers In New Era by Greg Kishbaugh
F ood packaging science responded in 2022 as supply chains were strained and food and packaging costs in- creased, according to Claire Sand, Owner, Packaging Tech-
nology and Research. This resulted in a renewed emphasis on using packaging to protect and ensure the authenticity of food ingredients and packaging. Food packaging science has accelerated conversions to metalized film, increased active packaging (modified atmo- spheres in antimicrobials) and vented packaging to facilitate thawing at retail (aka slack) to reduce food waste and costs. Furthermore, the FDA’s “ New Era of Smarter Food Safety ” declaration ushered in a wave of intelligent packaging.
Furthermore, the raising invest- ment in the advancement of re- lease liners is also assisting the market to grow.

Food packaging science will accelerate further in 2023 as food and packaging supplies continue to be threatened by war, famine, natural disasters, and global-localization imbalances. On the positive side, this investment in food pack- aging science will optimize food distribution, ad- dress food justice, and prevent more food waste. This lowers our food system’s environmental and social impact, said Sand, which is progress. Sands shares five predictions for food packaging science in 2023: 1. Antimicrobial packaging gets normalized Antimicrobial packaging has been used for many years in the food packaging industry. They are used to extend the shelf life of: • Berries (sulfur dioxide to inhibit mold); • Bread and fruits (nisin, cinnamon, SoFresh, and lower carbon-chain fatty acids to inhibit mold growth); and • Poultry (zinc oxide, grapefruit seed extract, oregano to inhibit Listeria). The year 2023 will showcase antimicrobial pack- aging to prevent food waste further, improve food safety, and extend supply chains. As a result of Covid-19, consumers are more comfortable with Packaging Breakthroughs (Cont’d from Page 1)
antimicrobials and consumers are prepared for clear label communication on how antimicrobial packaging can retain the shelf life of the foods they purchase. 2. Intelligent packaging aligns Intelligent packaging takes many shapes. Of these, pH-reliant intelligent packaging is, according to Sand, a simple way to assess food quality and safety. This is because pH is both an indicator of and re- strictor of bacteria growth, and because some bac- teria cannot grow at specific pHs, microbial growth alters the pH. Major progress has been made in packaging that contains pH indicators within the film structure or as a label. Interestingly, anthocy- anins extracted from foods are used in indicators and can be applied with an inkjet printer. Imagine retailers printing labels on deli-wrapped meat to communicate the product’s shelf life to consumers. 3. Right-sizing, package design focused on consumer Price-Pack architecture has hit many categories, such as candy, cereal, and cookies. However, this resizing has not connected yet with other categories.

In June 2022, Lecta introduced Linerset Glassine, a super-calendered material for siliconization. Lecta has upgraded its Line 8 paper plant in Condat, France, by investing more than 80 million euros in expenditure to produce release liners for siliconization. Therefore, these technological developments and the increasing investment in the design of release liners for various sectors are assisting the producers in creating goods that are fueling mar- ket expansion. Technology Growth Additionally, technology advancements like RFID, QR codes, NFC, and bar codes provide product information, instructions, discount coupons, and prices. This will increase the product’s global mar- ket penetration and expand the market’s potential throughout the ensuing years. Digital Expansion In the near future, growing digitization will em- phasize the expansion of the release liners market even more. Release liners are expected to experience strong market growth because of the expanding cosmet- ics, pharmaceutical, automobile, and personal care product industries in developing nations. This changes in 2023 and when it does, a win- dow into package design innovation will open. For example, design to replace the awkward re- tail-made meal kits will be enabled by second- ary-stage manufacturing. Another example is in reseal innovation. Reseal emerged as a nice-to-have in the early 1990s, and this prevented consumer food waste because it allowed consumers to reseal shredded cheese through an inline applied zipper feature adequate- ly. Some 30 years later, in 2023, consumers will see package design innovation to reduce their “after it is open” waste. Right-Sizing As brands struggle to achieve “just the right size for everyone” in PPA, package design finesse to en- able reseal is a means to allow consumers to take what is needed and securely reseal the package to protect food. 4. Science and relationships Intense consolidation in both the food and pack- aging industries has resulted in many large packag- ing converters and machinery suppliers competing for large brands’ business. However, many sec- Packaging Breakthroughs (Cont’d from Page 3)
ond-tier packaging companies work with smaller food companies out of this fray. These market dynamics will prompt values-based investment by small and mid-size packaging con- verters and machinery supplier companies. In ad- dition, there will be greater alignment with specific universities to implement focused innovations. 5. International consortiums The abundance of food packaging research world- wide, combined with employees who work unteth- ered remotely, is fueling multinational research con- sortiums on food packaging science. Fortunately for innovation, optimized research focused on address- ing an immediate need will replace self-imposed si- los traditionally within university research programs. AI Drives Forward This is consistent with the artificial intelligence (AI)-driven design of work protocols in develop- ing new medicines, and it holds great promise for advancing critical areas of food packaging science and focusing on food waste prevention. In addition, international cooperation in meeting the common need for packaging to protect food will advance understanding different cultures.

Wise Opens South Carolina Label Plant Wise has opened a new production and ware- housing location in Anderson, South Carolina. The new Southeast location offers 36,000 square feet of production and warehouse space. The ex- pansion was necessary to accommodate the compa- ny’s growth in the tag and label market, according to Wise. The new plant offers up to 10-color production and full finishing capabilities. In addition to the Anderson plant, Wise operates four other production locations, including Alpharet- ta, Georgia; Ft. Wayne, Indiana; Portland, Maine; and Butler, Pennsylvania. UK Packager Duraweld Acquires Prima Duraweld, Scarborough, UK, has acquired Prima in Bradford, which also provides packaging solutions. Duraweld has acquired the business and assets of Prima for an undisclosed sum. Founded in 1959, Duraweld designs and manufac- tures a wide range of packaging products, working across sectors such as healthcare and retail. The company employs around 50 people.
Prima’s products include printed and plain folding cartons, corrugated cartons and point-of-sale fold- ers and pockets, through to ring binders, PVC pock- ets and paper over-board boxes and folders. Domtar Cleared For Resolute Forest Acquisition The Canadian Competition Bureau has approved Domtar’s acquisition of Resolute Forest Products in a deal worth $2.7 billion. The transaction is expected to be concluded in the first half of the year. Under the agreement, Resolute will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Domtar. The two com- panies will continue to operate independently un- der their own names. The bureau had raised concerns that the acquisi- tion would create too much concentration in cer- tain product types in eastern and central Canada, and said that the transaction could create a monop- sony; as a result, Domtar confirmed it will sell its pulp mill in Dryden, Ontario, as well as its pulp and paper mill in Thunder Bay, which the bureau said is sufficient to address the situation. In 2023, Domtar celebrates its 175th year of man- ufacturing.

Laminated Labels Market To Reach $57.2 Billion The demand of global laminated labels market size and share in terms of revenue was valued at $38.5 billion in 2021 and it is expected to surpass around $57.2 billion mark by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approxi- mately 4.5 percent during the forecast period 2022 to 2030, according to a new report from Zion Mar- ket Research. Escalating demand for FMCG, pharmaceuticals, and consumer durables products will enhance the growth for the global laminated labels market, said the report. Further, the high consumption of food and beverage products worldwide is anticipated to foster demand in the market in the future. Phar- maceutical and healthcare sectors are boosting the laminated label packaging market across the world for a bigger product portfolio. Market Segmentation Based on the printing technology, the market is segmented into flexographic printing, screen print- ing, digital printing, offset printing, letterpress printing, gravure printing, and others. The flexographic printing segment is expected to capture a significant market share over the forecast period. Because it offers greater adaptability when compared to other printing methods like digital printing, offset printing, and more, flexographic printing is frequently used in laminated labels. This enables it to be applied to porous, non-porous, flat, and rough surfaces. Flexographic printing is more compatible with a wide range of ink types, includ- ing UV-curable, water-soluble, solvent-based, and others, according to the report. In terms of revenue, the Laminated Labels market size was valued at around $38.5 billion in 2021 and is projected to reach $57.2 billion by 2030. Berkshire Labels Joins Asteria Labels Berkshire Labels, Hungerford, England, has joined the Asteria Labels & Packaging Group, which, orig- inally established in Belgium, is an international group with production facilities in the Netherlands, France, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Estonia, the UK and Ireland. Established in 1983, Berkshire Labels specializes in self-adhesive labels and shrink sleeves, serving a wide range of industries including food and drink, toiletries, healthcare, horticultural to name a few.

ALFT Opens Flexo Plate Production Facility ALFT Packaging has opened a new flexo packag- ing production plant in Kotugoda, Sri Lanka. To bring plate production in-house, ALFT installed a FLEXCEL NX 4260 System at the new production facility, providing plates for its new Windmöller & Hölscher Miraflex II press. In-House Investment “Investing in in-house flexo platemaking and print- ing gives us total control of production and delivers a host of benefits that are relevant to our customers,” said Chairman Lakshman De Fonseka. “The faster turnaround with flexo is a particular advantage, en- abling packaging design changes — to color or for regional variations — to be expedited. With gravure, we’re talking about lead times of three to four weeks for cylinders, which all have to be imported. And if a cylinder gets damaged during production, you wait ten to 12 days for a replacement. Compare that to the 90 minutes to make new FLEXCEL NX Plates.” The FTA has released details of its upcoming Fo- rum 2023 schedule. The four-day technical confer- ence will take place April 16-19, at the Hilton Co- lumbus Downtown in Columbus, Ohio. AIMPLAS, the Plastics Technology Centre, has man- ufactured a plastic film from used coffee grounds to be used in flexible packaging applications in the wider pursuit of converting urban biowaste at scale.
To produce the film, AIMPLAS obtained PHA from restaurant coffee grounds sourced and recycled by bio-bean. This PHA was then formulated and ex- truded into a flexible material. The endeavor contributes toward the WaysTUP! Project, which is financed by the Horizon H2020 program and seeks to promote the importance of urban biowaste as a resource amongst local com- munities and create new value chains to utilize it at an industrial scale.
