SECURING YOUR HOME By Alana Lauren
programmed to turn on and off at different times, creating the illusion that someone is home. Enlist Help from a Neighbour Ask a trusted neighbour or friend to keep an eye on your home. They can pick up mail, bring in packages, and take care of any flyers left on your door, all of which signal that someone is home. If possible, have them park their car in your driveway occasionally. Hold Your Mail If you don’t have someone available to collect your mail, request a mail hold through your local postal service. Accumulated mail is a clear sign that a home is unoccupied. Avoid Oversharing on Social Media While it’s tempting to post vacation updates in real time, avoid advertising your absence on social media. Wait until you’re back to share photos and stories from your trip.
Secure Valuables Store important documents, jewellery, and other valuables in a safe or safety-deposit box. Keep expensive items out of plain sight from windows. Maintain the Exterior An untidy yard can signal that no one is home. Arrange for someone to mow the lawn or clear snow if you’ll be away for an extended period. Install a Security System A home security system provides an added layer of protection. Many modern systems offer 24/7 monitoring and can alert you and authorities if there’s suspicious activity. Taking these steps to secure your home can help ensure your trip is worry-free, leaving you to enjoy your travels without concern for your property’s safety.
Heading out for a trip is exciting, but it’s important to ensure your home is safe and secure before you leave. Taking a few precautions can provide peace of mind and protect your property while you’re away. Here are some practical steps to secure your home when you travel. Lock Everything This might seem obvious, but double-check that all doors and windows are locked before you leave. Don’t forget secondary entrances, such as basement windows, garage doors, and side gates. Consider installing deadbolts for added security. Use Smart Home Technology Smart home devices can be an excellent deterrent to potential intruders. Install smart locks, security cameras, or video doorbells to monitor your property remotely. Smart lights or plugs can be

CREATE A PICTURE- PERFECT BEDROOM By Alana Lauren
Creating a bedroom that looks straight out of a magazine is all about combining style, functionality, and a touch of luxury. Here’s how to transform your space into a picture-perfect retreat.
Use Rugs to Anchor the Space A well-placed rug adds warmth and texture while tying the room together. Choose a size that fits your bed and extends beyond its edges, creating a cohesive foundation. Incorporate Greenery Plants or fresh flowers add life and vibrancy. A few well- placed potted plants or a vase of flowers on your nightstand can make the room feel fresh and inviting.
style. A statement headboard, sleek nightstands, and a sturdy dresser can anchor the room. Choose pieces with clean lines and finishes that complement your chosen colour palette. Focus on Lighting Layered lighting creates a warm, inviting atmosphere. Incorporate a combination of ambient, task, and accent lighting. Statement fixtures like chandeliers or pendant lights add a touch of drama, while bedside lamps and wall sconces provide practical yet stylish illumination. Add Artwork and Decor Large-scale art or a gallery wall can instantly elevate your bedroom. Choose pieces that reflect your personality and complement your design. Add decorative accents like vases, candles, or trays for a curated look, but avoid over- cluttering.
Start with a Cohesive Colour Palette Choose a neutral base like white, gray, or beige and pair it with one or two accent colours. This creates a polished and harmonious look. Soft, muted tones like pastels or earth tones add sophistication, while bold accents can create focal points. Layer Your Bedding The bed is the centerpiece of any bedroom, so focus on creating a layered look with luxurious textures. Start with crisp white sheets, add a plush comforter or duvet, and top it off with decorative throws and pillows. Mix fabrics like cotton, linen, and velvet for added depth. Stick to your colour scheme and use patterned pillows or throws sparingly for a magazine-worthy finish. Invest in Quality Furniture Select furniture that combines functionality with timeless
Keep It Tidy Finally, keep surfaces clean
and organized. Stylish bedrooms are visually
appealing because they are uncluttered and intentional. Utilize stylish storage solutions to keep essentials out of sight. By focusing on these elements, you can create a bedroom that’s not only beautiful but also a true reflection of your personal style.

cozy CREATE A By Alana Lauren
HOME
Soft Lighting
Island winters can feel lengthy and dreary, but a warm and inviting space provides a sanctuary to retreat to until spring arrives. Crafting a cozy home is all about fostering comfort, warmth, and a welcoming ambiance. Here are some practical tips to make your home feel more inviting:
Lighting plays a crucial role in setting a cozy mood. Opt for warm-toned bulbs, table lamps, and string lights instead of harsh overhead lighting. Candles can also add a soothing, intimate glow.
Layer Textures
Incorporate various textures to add depth and comfort.
18 / OTM / JAN 25
Declutter
Use plush rugs, soft throws, and cushions on sofas and chairs. Materials like wool, faux fur, and knits are particularly effective in creating a snug ambiance.
A clutter-free home feels more relaxing. Organize belongings into storage solutions and create open spaces that breathe.
Warm Colours
Layered Curtains
Choose a warm colour palette for walls, furniture, and decor. Earthy tones like beige, terracotta, mustard, and olive green evoke a sense of relaxation and homeliness.
Use layered curtains to frame windows elegantly and control the light. Thicker curtains also add insulation, contributing to the warmth of a room.
Personal Touches
Create Nooks
Fill your space with items that reflect your personality and memories, such as family photos, travel souvenirs, and cherished artwork. These items make your home uniquely yours and create a sense of belonging.
Design small, cozy corners for reading, meditating, or enjoying a cup of tea. Add a comfy chair, a side table, and a soft blanket to make it extra inviting.
Warm Flooring
Comfortable Furniture
If you have hard floors, layer them with rugs to soften the space and add warmth underfoot. Opt for materials like wool or shag for maximum coziness.
Invest in cozy furniture that encourages relaxation. Overstuffed sofas, armchairs with ottomans, and beds with layered bedding make spaces inviting.
Seasonal Decor
Natural Elements
Switch up decor seasonally to enhance the cozy vibe. In winter, add heavier throws and candles, while summer can feature lighter fabrics and fresh flowers. By integrating these elements thoughtfully, your home can become a haven of warmth and comfort, perfect for relaxation and enjoyment year-round.
Bring nature indoors with houseplants, flowers, or natural materials like wood and stone. Plants purify the air and create a calming connection to the outdoors.
Scent
Appeal to your sense of smell with inviting scents. Use scented candles, diffusers, or incense in comforting
fragrances like vanilla, lavender, or cinnamon.

LISTING YOUR HOME DURING THE OFF-SEASON
By Mike Thompson, Oydssey Virutal
One of the most notable benefits of selling in the off-season is the reduced competition.
26 / OTM / JAN 25
S elling your home in Prince Edward Island during the off-season can be a strategic and rewarding decision, offering advantages that are often overlooked. While the spring and summer months are traditionally seen as prime times for real estate, the quieter winter season can provide unique opportunities to stand out in the market and secure a favorable sale.
One of the most notable benefits of selling in the off-season is the reduced competition. During the winter months, there are typically fewer homes listed for sale, making it easier for your property to stand out. With fewer options available, serious buyers are more likely to take notice of your home. For homeowners eager to sell, this can be a prime opportunity to avoid the saturated market of the warmer months, where listings can sometimes get lost in the crowd. Winter buyers tend to be more serious and goal- oriented compared to the casual browsers often seen in peak seasons. Many of these buyers are motivated by specific circumstances, such as job relocations, family needs, or investment opportunities. Their urgency to find and purchase a home can lead to quicker transactions and potentially better offers. This dynamic can benefit sellers who are looking to finalize a deal efficiently and without prolonged negotiations.
The off-season also presents an excellent opportunity to attract investors seeking vacation rental properties. Many investors prefer to purchase during the winter to allow time for renovations or updates before the busy summer tourism season. With fewer properties available on the market, your home is more likely to catch the attention of investors eager to secure a rental property in time for the influx of summer visitors. This adds another layer of potential buyers who may be particularly motivated to close a deal. While winter may lack the vibrant landscapes of warmer months, it offers a chance to showcase your home’s winter charm. Highlight features such as cozy fireplaces, energy-efficient heating systems, or well- insulated windows. A warm, inviting ambiance can help potential buyers envision your property as a comfortable retreat during colder months. Additionally, keeping walkways clear of snow and ensuring good lighting can make a great first impression.
Listing your home during the off-season allows you to get ahead of the busy spring market. By selling in the winter, you can close your sale before the competition heats up, giving you more flexibility and potentially better terms. This timing can also benefit buyers who are eager to move quickly, creating a win-win situation for both parties. Selling your home in Prince Edward Island during the off-season is a strategic decision that offers reduced competition, access to serious buyers, and opportunities to appeal to motivated investors. While the winter market may be quieter, this can work to your advantage by positioning your property as a standout option. By thoughtfully preparing your home and leveraging the unique dynamics of the off-season, you can secure a successful sale before the bustling peak season arrives.
