ORAL HEALTH IS LIKE AN INVESTMENT It Takes Time and Patience

As we quickly approach 2023, many of us will create our New Year’s resolutions. Some may be making goals to exercise or read more, spend more time outdoors, practice mindfulness, and other lifestyle resolutions. But are you considering your oral health in your yearly goals? Incorporating your oral health into your New Year’s resolutions will benefit your overall health exponentially. Oral hygiene goals can vary depending on your current oral health. Are you brushing twice a day? What about flossing and using mouthwash? Do you need dental implants, crowns, or other care? Once you analyze where you are, you can begin creating goals to help improve your oral hygiene — which will improve your body overall. No matter where you are in your oral health journey, always remember to take baby steps. I like to tell my patients oral health is like building a deck — it’s an investment. If you decide you want a back porch, it will take time for everything to come together. You must have the right equipment, insight, and patience to build a porch. You won’t see the result overnight, but if you keep pursuing it, you will have a beautiful patio to show for the hard work and dedication you put into it. Likewise, when it comes to your oral health, you can’t expect yourself to accomplish your goals overnight or in a couple of months. So, create smaller goals to help you reach your desired outcome. I will be happy to assist you on this journey and provide information and strategies to help you achieve your resolutions. No matter where you are with your oral hygiene, please don’t hesitate to contact my team or me.

DEBATING ABOUT GETTING DENT

Here Are 5 Benefits to Consider

When you have missing teeth, the best solution is dental implants. Not only will it make your smile complete again, but it will also improve your physical health. In previous editions, we discussed dental implants and answered frequently asked questions. But it’s understandable if you’re still concerned about dental implants and what they can offer you. Here are the top five benefits of choosing dental implants. THEY ARE BUILT TO LAST! Because dental implants are made out of titanium alloys, they create a strong bond with your natural bone tissue. As long as you practice good oral hygiene and visit us for cleanings and other preventative care, they can last the rest of your life.

IT WILL IMPROVE YOUR SPEECH. If you know someone or if you ever had dentures, you may notice they can slip and cause a speaker to stumble over their words. Since dental implants are rooted within your jawbone, they offer increased stability while you talk. EAT WHAT YOU LIKE — NO DIET NECESSARY! When eating foods that require lots of chewing, dentures can slip loose. You may have to restrict what you eat if you have dentures, but that’s not the case with dental implants — you can eat whatever you want. Since implants function like natural teeth, you can continue eating your favorite foods without problems or stress. DENTAL IMPLANTS LOOK NATURAL. Some may have concerns about dental implants because they don’t want their teeth to look fake, but these implants look and feel like natural teeth. So, no need to worry about if people will notice — they will be too busy focusing on your beautiful smile!

DENTAL IMPLANTS IMPROVE YOUR ORAL HEALTH TREMENDOUSLY.

If you lose a tooth, you’re more at risk of losing bone density in your jaw. Your jawbone beneath the missing tooth will start to recede and not function as properly. But dental implants will keep the bone tissue healthy and ensure no additional health risks occur.

DENTURES VS. IMPLANTS

How Do They Compare?

Gone are

changes in the structure of your mouth. Flexible dentures do not need an adhesive paste and are both odor- and stain-resistant.

the days of dealing with missing teeth — dentures and implants combat the problem. They help you chew, improve your speech, and support your facial muscles. When teeth are missing and our gums are exposed, we are at risk for infections, gum disease, and even bone loss, but dentures and implants can help. What are the pros and cons of each, and which option is best for you? Among the oldest treatments for missing teeth are dentures, removable prosthetic teeth fitted to your mouth. Some dentures only replace a few missing teeth, while others may replace an entire upper or lower row. Sometimes, dentures will replace all of your teeth.

CONS OF DENTURES: •

They may need to be replaced down the road and can be broken.

• •

They may cause mouth irritation.

Due to the loss of your jawbone, dentures may alter facial shape and structure.

They are stable in your mouth and can be brushed and flossed, just like natural teeth.

Dentures can become loose.

CONS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS: •

As for dental implants, they are permanently fixed into your mouth with a metal prosthetic root implanted into your jawbone. The very top of the tooth is usually fitted with a crown, which resembles a tooth.

Implants can loosen over time, known as implant failure. Surgery is required when implants are placed in your mouth. Dental implants are more costly than dentures.

Before deciding whether dentures or dental implants are right for you, consult with your experienced dental care provider — they are the pros and can guide you in the right direction, depending on your wants and needs!

PROS OF DENTAL IMPLANTS: •

Implants are made to last a lifetime and most closely resemble natural teeth. Dental implants replace the root of the tooth, preventing jaw bone loss.

PROS OF DENTURES: •

Beyond tooth extraction, no surgery is needed. Dentures are more cost-effective than implants. Metal plate dentures can easily adjust to

BRUSH UP ON CHILDREN’S ORAL HEALTH How to Encourage Healthy Dental Habits

Caring for oral health is always essential, but it’s vital for children. We implore parents to talk to their children about the importance of oral hygiene. But how do you encourage children to practice good dental hygiene? One of the best ways to get your kids into the routine of taking care of their oral health is by making dental hygiene fun. To start, allow your children to have some form of independence by enabling them to pick out their toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, and mouthwash. The freedom will encourage them to think positively about their oral health. While helping your child with their dental hygiene routine, play their favorite song as they brush their teeth and rinse their mouth. This will ensure they spend enough time on their oral care and have fun. You can even reward your child after they finish their dental routine by giving them a healthy snack or allowing them to watch their favorite TV show or movie. If your child is younger than 8 or 9, it’s best if you brush their teeth for them. Younger kids don’t have the motor skills or muscle strength to brush their teeth properly. They could have difficulty reaching some areas in their mouth on their own. By assisting them, you also show them proper brushing techniques and the importance of brushing your teeth twice a day. Some children may have anxiety or fear about going to the dentist. If so, plan a fun activity for them to do after their dentist appointment. This will give them something to look forward to and help them take their mind off their worries. Here at Bismarck Advanced Dental & Implants, we care about your children’s overall health. We are happy to share information and strategies with you and your child about healthy oral habits and why they should take special care of their mouth. Our goal is to make your entire family feel comfortable as soon as you enter our office. So, allow us to help you and your

WHEN SHOULD I EAT DETERGENT FOODS? Timing is very important when it comes to detergent foods. Dentists recommend brushing your teeth after every meal, but sometimes it’s just not possible or you don’t have access to a toothbrush. Detergent foods are perfect to eat right after you finish a meal or to incorporate into your midday snack. That way the detergent foods can rid your mouth of stuck-on food. Incorporating detergent foods into your diet is one of the easiest, most efficient ways to maintain a healthy smile. Their fibrous texture acts as a natural toothbrush, scrubbing away harmful materials from your teeth. But always remember, these foods aren’t a replacement for brushing and flossing. that can actually clean your teeth? It sounds impossible, but it’s true! These foods are called detergents. You may be thinking of the detergent that goes in your laundry, but that’s not the case here. Detergent foods are specific foods that clean your teeth naturally and keep your smile looking bright. WHAT ARE DETERGENT FOODS? Detergent foods are everyday edibles that have a crunchy or coarse texture. These foods act like bristles that scrub our teeth while we eat.

Lettuce

Cucumbers

Detergent foods can remove excess materials from the enamel of your teeth without adding any sugars or fats in their place. These types of foods are more beneficial unprocessed and natural. They are typically low in acidity and have properties that help eliminate oral sugars that cling to your teeth and bring down saliva’s overall pH level. The higher the pH level, the higher the acidity levels in your mouth where bacteria can thrive.

Examples of these foods include, but are not limited to:
