Life’s Marathon THE ROLE MENTORS PLAY IN GUIDING YOUR PATH Serving You In: Baltimore, MD • Bethesda, MD • Clinton, MD Ellicott City, MD • Frederick, MD • Germantown, MD Wheaton, MD • Washington, D.C. • Alexandria, VA • Manassas, VA Imagine training for a marathon without guidance, a training plan, or advice from seasoned runners. It would be nearly impossible to finish, let alone keep up. That’s how I view life and business without mentors. January is National Mentoring Month, a time to reflect on the huge impact that mentorship has on personal and professional growth. My book, “Run A Marathon, Not A Sprint,” was inspired by the long-term approach to building a successful law firm, and I can confidently say that mentors have been pivotal in my journey. Throughout my career, mentors have been a huge influence on my success. They’ve shared their knowledge, provided honest feedback, and encouraged me to step out of my comfort zone. When building my law firm, I had ideas and dreams, but, like many, I lacked the experience to turn those dreams into reality. That’s where my mentors came in. They helped me map out a path, avoid mistakes, and make informed decisions. Mentors provide a perspective that you may not be able to achieve alone. They’ve been where you’re headed and can help you navigate the complexities of your journey. They also challenge you, push you to think bigger, and explore ideas you might not have considered. The Power of Being a Mentor Just as having mentors has enriched my life, being a mentor to others has been equally rewarding. Sharing my experiences and helping others develop their skills allows me to give back to the profession that has given me so much. Seeing someone I’ve mentored grow, take risks, and achieve their own version of success is fulfilling. Mentorship is a two-way street. While I’m imparting knowledge to someone else, I’m also learning. New perspectives and fresh ideas from others often spark my own creativity and help me grow. A Catalyst for Growth One of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned from both having and being a mentor is that mentorship accelerates growth. When

we collaborate and share ideas, we combine strengths to produce great results. In my experience, mentorship is not about having all the answers but about fostering an environment where ideas and innovation can flourish. Mentors have guided me to think beyond the immediate challenges and focus on the bigger picture. They’ve encouraged me to embrace the marathon mindset and understand that success is about consistency, endurance, and the willingness to adapt. Expanding Beyond Comfort Zones Don’t get comfy — growth doesn’t happen in comfort zones, and mentors often push us to expand beyond them. They encourage us to take risks, embrace challenges, and trust in our ability to overcome obstacles. Building my law firm required me to step into roles I wasn’t initially comfortable with, from managing a team to making difficult business decisions. Through the guidance and support of mentors, I developed the confidence and skills to succeed. The Marathon of Life and Business In life and business, mentorship is like having a coach who runs alongside you in the marathon to guide your pace, cheer you on, and help you navigate obstacles. So, let’s honor the mentors who have shaped us and strive to be that guiding force for others. Together, through mentorship, we can create a legacy of growth, collaboration, and great results.

Walt Disney World Without the Wallet Woes YOUR GUIDE TO

Black ice is one of winter’s worst hazards, often causing accidents and injuries because of its nearly invisible nature. Unlike snow or slush, black ice is a thin, transparent layer of ice that blends in with the pavement, often making it difficult to detect. Its slippery surface has very little traction, making it a significant threat to drivers and pedestrians. Why Is Black Ice So Dangerous? Black ice is stealthy! Often forming during freezing rain or when temperatures drop rapidly after snow melts, it is commonly found on shaded roads, bridges, and overpasses. For drivers, hitting black ice can result in losing control, leading to serious car accidents. Pedestrians are also at risk, as slipping on black ice can cause severe injuries like fractures, sprains, and head trauma. Preventative Steps to Stay Safe For Drivers: • Reduce speed, especially on bridges and overpasses where black ice is more likely. • Avoid sudden braking or sharp turns, and use gentle movements to maintain control. • Keep your tires properly inflated, and consider using winter tires for better traction. • Drive during daylight hours when the sun can melt potential ice. ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR AVOID

For years, a visit to Walt Disney World felt like an essential part of the American upbringing. There’s nothing quite like AFFORDABLE FAMILY FUN taking a picture with Mickey Mouse, the unique water smell in the Pirates of the Caribbean attraction, or the night-time fireworks spectacle over Cinderella Castle.

However, the cost of a Disney vacation has increased significantly in recent years, and features that helped make the trip more magical, like free transportation to and from the airport, are a thing of the past. Many families struggle to save enough money to travel to Orlando to visit Disney World. Thankfully, cost-saving strategies can help get you and your loved ones in front of the castle. Have a plan for snacks and meals before arriving at the park. Disney parks are well-known for their world-class restaurants and food options, but with good quality comes a higher cost. A soft pretzel shaped like Mickey Mouse with cheese sauce costs more than $8; buying more than one adds up quickly. Disney allows you to bring your own snacks and nonalcoholic beverages into the park, so consider taking advantage of that. Make a budget, research the restaurants beforehand, and have everyone pick out what they want to eat so you know exactly how much food will cost. Avoid Disney hotels. Disney’s hotels have different price tiers. Deluxe resorts like Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge usually cost around $500 a night. Moderate-tier resorts like Disney’s Coronado Springs can run anywhere from $250–$500, depending on the season. And the value resorts usually stay under $250 a night. However, if you were to stay at a non-Disney hotel, you’d pay a fraction of the price while still being close to the parks. Consider hiring a travel agent. This might sound counterproductive if you’re trying to save money, but Disney works closely with various travel agencies to help park- goers cut costs and reduce stress. They will help plan every aspect of your trip and ensure you get all meal reservations and Lightning Lanes your family wants. They’re also the first to know when discounts go live, so they can ensure you get resort and ticket prices at the best value.

For Pedestrians: • Wear shoes with a good grip designed for winter conditions. • Walk slowly and take smaller steps to help maintain balance. • Use handrails when available and avoid walking on untreated surfaces. Our pets are one of the great constants in our lives. They are always ready to support us after a hard day with warm companionship and slobbery kisses. However, despite our best efforts to keep them corralled while we are away, they can go missing. Losing a pet is a stressful experience. However, not all is lost. After getting lost, over 90% of dogs are found, and nearly 20% return home of their own accord. And for cats, in about 90% of cases, they are lost an average of 5–7 days before being found or making their way home. Here are some simple steps you can take to help your animal companions return home safely. Search Your Local Area It may seem obvious, but searching your immediate area is important when your pet goes missing. Make sure to thoroughly search every room and area of your house: your basement, crawl spaces, closets, cabinets, bedrooms, and garage. Failing that, check with your neighbors. In most cases, pets stay within a reasonable distance from home. Contact Authorities Your next step should be to call all relevant authorities in your area. If you are on vacation or traveling with your pets when they go missing, using Petfinder can help you locate local shelters. Call your local animal shelters, animal control officers, and veterinarian offices to report your animal missing. Program their numbers into your phone to make the back-and-forth easier and stress-free. Lost Pet Poster Lastly, you should create flyers and posters featuring a recent photo of your missing pet. These should feature the name, breed, and notable features of your missing pet and your contact information should anyone need to reach you concerning its whereabouts. If you are proactive, your chances of reuniting with your missing pet are high. TIPS TO FIND YOUR ANIMAL FRIEND Lost Your Pet?
