Wanamaker, while Postmaster General of the United States, carefully selected Gospel tracts for distribution to those with whom he came in contact. Almost every foreign mission field in the world has been opened by ambassadors of the cross who first used tracts to win the heathen to Christ. Thank God for the opportunity of the printed page, for the testimony of the Lord’s Word placed in the hands of those who need to know the saving power of our Saviour’s re deeming grace! POWER OF PERSONAL PEACE No doubt you’ve heard the name of Robert Ingersoll. He was a well known infidel who admittedly had no regard for the things of Christ. One day, in a certain city he planned to lecture on the subject, “Foundations of the Chris tian Faith.” It so happened that in that town there was one of his former school mates. He was a fellow who had start ed in the legal profession with great promise and anticipation. A fter he was married and the father of two chil dren, alcohol took a grip on his life. This vice ruined his home, his char acter, and lost his friends. One night he was found lying drunk in an alley. A friend of his, who was an earnest Christian witness, took him home and saw to it that he had a warm bed and was sobered up. He urged him to change his course and to receive Jesus Christ, the only One who could transform his life. God’s grace reached down in its ever-miraculous fashion, and this fel low was wonderfully converted. He re built his shattered home, rescuing his children from the streets. Because of his positive testimony, he attained again the respectability of his calling. When he read the newspaper notice of Ingersoll’s lecture, he sat down and sent his college chum the following letter, “My dear friend Robert: I see that you are to deliver a lecture against Christianity and the Bible. Perhaps you know some of my history since we parted. I disgraced my home and fam ily, losing my character and everything 30 You’ll never stumble as long as you’re on your knees.

else a man can hold dear in this world. You may know that I went down and doum until I was a poor despised out cast. When I thought there was none to help or to save me, there came Jesus Christ. I found His power, His loving kindness, His tender sympathy, in my desperate need. Through the story of the cross, I turned to the Saviour. I brought back my wife to my home. I gathered my children together again from the streets and we are happy. I’m doing what I can for the cause of Christ. Now, old friend, would you stand tonight before the people of Pitts burg, telling them what you have to say against the religion that will reach down to the lowest depths of Hell and find a despicable sinner like me? What possibly could you have to say against a salvation like that?” Although an un believer, Robert Ingersoll, a forceful speaker, read the letter to his Pitts burg audience that night. He further declared, “Ladies and Gentlemen, I have nothing to say against a religion that will do this for a man. I ’m here to talk about a religion that is being preached by those who are hypocrites. It is easy to find fault with the church, yet there stands one Supreme. No man has ever dared to point his finger at the char acter of Christ to find any fault with Him!" We need never grumble that roses have thorns. We should rather be thank ful that the thorns have roses. COATED WINDOWS Glass is a wonderful thing. In our homes, windows allow observation upon the world outside. Suppose you took that front pane in your house and coated it with silver. What would happen is that it would cease being a window. Now it would be a mirror. Instead of looking outside, all you could see would be your own self reflected. Spiritually speak ing, the desire for money, the love of silver, will coat over the window of our souls so that we see only ourselves and not the spiritual needs about us. Paul enjoins us to “look not every man on his own things but every man also on the things (or the spiritual needs) of others.” While money in itself is not
