THE ELECTRICAL INDUSTRY TRAINING AND BUSINESS SUPPORT SERVICES PROVIDER HELD ITS FOURTH ANNUAL EVENT IN GALGORM RESORT & SPA, BALLYMENA ON NOVEMBER 26… ETT hosts Stay Connected 2025
and sustainability. Two industry panel sessions drove discussion on the issues shaping the sector. The ETT Industry Working Group Panel focused on Driving Action on Electrical Safety, Skills and Sustainability in Northern Ireland. The Industry Working Group, established following the publication of the Ending Shock Silence report in November 2024, has grown into a powerful collaborative voice for the sector. Members representing public and private organisations shared insights on building a stronger safety culture and addressing skills shortages and apprenticeship needs. The newly-launched 2025 Action Plan sets out targeted actions, clear responsibilities and new opportunities
Stay Connected 2025 welcomed hundreds of delegates from across the Northern Ireland electrical industry, celebrating its fourth and most successful year yet. Opening the day, Michael Dowds, ETT Board Member, welcomed delegates and emphasised ETT’s ongoing commitment to raising standards, strengthening skills and building meaningful connections across the electrical installation sector. Through keynote speakers, panel discussions, CPD workshops and a top-class exhibitor showcase, attendees explored emerging technologies, regulatory updates, safety culture, skills development and the future direction of the electrical sector. Across the CPD workshops, attendees accessed a wide range of technical, compliance and business-focused sessions, delivered by experts including Electrical Safety First, NAPIT, NICEIC, SparkyNinja, ECA - Excellence in Electrotechnical and Engineering Services, Click Scolmore, Luceco Group,
NIE Networks, Inspired Business Consultancy and Marc Watters.
The room fell silent as Louise Adamson took to the stage to deliver the keynote address. Her brother, Michael Adamson, died in a completely preventable electrical incident on August 4, 2005. Louise spoke with honesty, pain and purpose as she shared the devastation of losing her brother at just 26. Louise also highlighted the tragic death of seven-year-old Harvey Tyrrell, killed by a dangerously defective installation completed by an electrician with 50 years’ experience. This, she argued, exemplifies why mandatory CPD, stronger oversight and a regulated competence framework are essential. Experience without up-to- date knowledge and accountability can be deadly. Her call to action - “This is your world. Shape it.” - will stay with us. Building on Louise’s keynote, the rest of the event strengthened the central themes of safety, skills, standards
for employers, educators and policymakers to work together.
The afternoon panel session focused on Upskilling, Reskilling and Diversification: What Does the Future Hold for Electricians? Stay Connected 2025 once again demonstrated that Northern Ireland’s electrical industry is united in commitment, purpose and vision. Through collaboration, learning and leadership, the sector is building a safer, smarter and more sustainable future.

FIRE PROTECTION
THE NEXT-GEN ENCLOSURE FIRE PROTECTION OFFERS ELECTRICIANS, PANEL BUILDERS AND SYSTEM INTEGRATORS A RELIABLE NEW LINE OF DEFENCE… Live Electrical’s new extinguishing device
As modern electrical installations become more compact and densely populated, the risk of internal enclosure fires has grown. In response, Live Electrical has introduced a new Heat Aerosol Fire Extinguishing Device - a compact, self- activating solution engineered to suppress fires at their earliest stage inside distribution boards, control panels and sensitive equipment enclosures. Its arrival offers electricians, panel builders and system integrators a reliable new line of defence where traditional fire- protection methods fall short. With evolving trends in modern electrical installations, the density of equipment inside distribution boards, switchgear, automation panels, EV charging systems and renewable-energy enclosures continues to rise. Heat build-up, loose connections, component failure and overcurrent faults are all leading causes of internal cabinet fires. Traditional room-based suppression systems rarely protect the inside of these compact spaces, leaving a critical gap in fire defence. The LFE10G device has been engineered precisely to fill this gap. A new generation Unlike conventional extinguishers that rely on external fire-alarm circuits or human intervention, the LFE10G is a self-activating condensed aerosol generator. When internal enclosure temperatures reach 170°C or flame detection, its integrated temperature-sensing lead triggers instantaneous discharge. The result is a rapid flood of ultra-fine aerosol particles that interrupt the combustion chain, extinguishing fire at its earliest stage.
Live Electrical’s new device brings this technology to UK installers with a design tailored for industrial reliability, electrical compatibility and ease of installation. Designed for protected spaces up to 0.4m³, the LFE10G is ideal for distribution boards, battery enclosures, telecom cabinets,
systems. Its operation is entirely mechanical and temperature based, meaning it provides full-time protection even during power outages or system faults. The 10cm sensing lead allows strategic placement of the trigger wire near heat-generating components such as breakers, contactors, transformers, terminals or busbars - ensuring the fastest possible detection at the point of risk. Rugged construction ensures long-term reliability, and the five- year service life aligns well with typical maintenance intervals for electrical equipment. Safety standards The LFE10G adheres to the safety expectations required of modern fire-suppression components. Its use of strontium-nitrate-based oxidisers ensures clean burning, low toxicity and rapid aerosol formation. Thermal clearance data ensures installers can confidently position the device near heat sources without risking excessive enclosure surface temperatures. “The LFE10G is ideal for distribution boards, battery enclosures, telecom cabinets, automation control panels, domestic and commercial electrical systems.”
automation control panels, domestic and commercial electrical systems. With a compact technical
footprint, the unit fits seamlessly into new or existing enclosures without redesigning panel layouts. Preferred solution Condensed aerosol technology has become a preferred solution in sensitive electrical environments due to its unique benefits over powder, foam and gas-based suppression: • Residue-free discharge protects sensitive electronics • No pressurised cylinders mean no leak risk and minimal maintenance • Safe, reliable and environmentally friendly • Fast and effective fire suppression • Compact size suits densely packed enclosures Easy installation Ease and flexibility of installation were top priorities in the product’s development. The LFE10G can be fitted using standard DIN rail mounting or the supplied adhesive mount, ensuring compatibility with traditional metal-clad boards, plastic enclosures and custom control panels. Electricians will appreciate that the device operates without auxiliary power, wiring into alarm circuits or networking to control

SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY DINGLE PROJECT PROFILE
FREEMAN ELECTRICAL SERVICES HAS SENSITIVELY INTEGRATED FUTURE-PROOF MODERN CAMPUS TECHNOLOGY INTO AN HISTORIC LANDMARK IN THIS STANDOUT ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION… An installation with the wow factor
Perched on the rugged Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry, Sacred Heart University Dingle occupies a restored 19th-century Christian Brothers School building. A protected structure and landmark of regional education since 1880, the campus has undergone a sensitive €12m redevelopment and refurbishment into a modern campus for US study-abroad students. Delivering a complete electrical package, Freeman Electrical Services faced the challenging task of integrating modern technology for a state-of-the- art educational facility into an historic structure. Works included the installation of modern lighting technology delivering precise, glare-free illumination, full Cat 6a ICT structured cabling with Wi-Fi access points, UPS, site-wide electrical distribution and all general service requirements. The Co Kerry contractor wired all mechanical systems including heat pump,
heat recovery, underfloor heating, air conditioning and BMS building control systems. Both wired and wireless access control systems were installed, alongside solar PV, medical trunking, CCTV and intruder alarms, an analogue addressable fire alarm system for teaching spaces, and general electrical works throughout medical teaching spaces and demonstration rooms, breakout and administration areas and the extensive campus grounds. The main priorities for the electrical installation were to update the functionality of the campus while retaining the authenticity of the original building, providing low-maintenance, durable solutions but also allowing serviceability to all areas. Routing modern electrical and mechanical services through 19th-century buildings required meticulous co-ordination between Freeman Electrical Services and the project architect, consultant engineer,

main and mechanical contractors. Each part of the structure offered new challenges from physical space to ensuring the installation was in keeping with the original building. Access had to be maintained to all electrical and mechanical service routes to meet future technology needs. With the project featuring mixed ceiling heights and some double-height roof spaces, this was achieved through a combination of specialised attic access spaces and hidden service routes. Alan Freeman, co-founder of Freeman Electrical Services, says, “Sacred Heart University is our largest project to date, and we are very proud of all involved who worked and co-operated above and beyond to ensure this project leaves a lasting impression on anyone who attends a course or visits it. “We believe that we met all our client’s requirements and have left a modern, low maintenance and energy-efficient building for decades to come. “We supplied and installed a bespoke lighting system tailored to the client’s requirements internally and externally and, while functional, it also leaves you with a bit of wow factor. This project is a showcase of how to integrate modern electrical systems into a 19th century building, enhancing rather than
detracting from its original appearance.” Freeman Electrical Services was established in 2013 by brothers Alan and Conor Freeman, with Daire Freeman joining as a third director in 2016. Experienced in electrical contracting, site supervision and project management, the team handles every project with professionalism, precision and commitment to customer satisfaction. Gary Delaney, executive director and company secretary at Sacred Heart University, says, “The quality, design, neatness and integrity of the electrical installation have been commended by all of those involved in this project - it is textbook perfection. “Alan, Conor and Daire worked closely with our design team to ensure that every possible permutation in terms of synchronising the electrical and mechanical installations was presented to us. This included a seamless integration of our building management systems, and our extensive IT network and infrastructure. Future proofing was always at the fore. “The most obvious day-to-day impact of Freeman’s involvement must be in respect of the lighting, and the design and commissioning of same. It is beyond fit for purpose, is highly cost-efficient and is wonderfully intuitive and easy to manage.”

SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY DINGLE PROJECT PROFILE
THE COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME COMBINES ZUMTOBEL’S PRECISION ENGINEERING WITH SISTER COMPANY THORN LIGHTING’S STYLISH, FUNCTIONAL AND ENERGY- EFFICIENT LUMINAIRES… Zumtobel & Thorn – lighting design & products
Lighting plays a pivotal role in enhancing the function and character of the renovated spaces at Sacred Heart University (SHU) Dingle. Setting a new benchmark for beautifully-lit learning environments, the comprehensive scheme combines Zumtobel’s precision engineering with sister company Thorn Lighting’s stylish, functional and energy-efficient luminaires. Involved in the project from its early design stages, Zumtobel produced a detailed 3D model and animated walkthrough to successfully advocate for the use of recessed SLOTLIGHT infinity II lines over a value-engineered, surface-mounted alternative. Thorn’s outdoor luminaires were specified with C5 corrosion-resistant finishes to withstand the harsh coastal
environment. Sandstone elements are lit by warmer tones and limestone details by cooler whites, creating a striking visual contrast and highlighting the building’s architectural character. Philip Dewey, Key Account Manager at Thorn and Zumtobel Lighting, says, “It was important to me that students studying in Ireland felt a strong connection to their home campus. As part of the lighting design, I wanted to incorporate SHU’s corporate colours into select feature luminaires, blending a sense of belonging with visual impact, while ensuring optimal lighting performance across all spaces. “The building itself holds historical significance, and I aimed to accentuate those architectural details through careful illumination. Internally, that meant balancing modern, functional
lighting with subtle heritage highlighting. For the exterior, I chose a dynamic mix of 4000K and 3000K colour temperatures to enhance the façade and make the structure stand out after dark. “This project has certainly been a standout for both Zumtobel and Thorn. It exemplifies the harmony of modern lighting technology with heritage architecture, particularly meaningful in a building originally constructed in 1880.”
