SACRED HEART UNIVERSITY DINGLE PROJECT PROFILE
FREEMAN ELECTRICAL SERVICES HAS SENSITIVELY INTEGRATED FUTURE-PROOF MODERN CAMPUS TECHNOLOGY INTO AN HISTORIC LANDMARK IN THIS STANDOUT ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION… An installation with the wow factor
Perched on the rugged Dingle Peninsula in Co Kerry, Sacred Heart University Dingle occupies a restored 19th-century Christian Brothers School building. A protected structure and landmark of regional education since 1880, the campus has undergone a sensitive €12m redevelopment and refurbishment into a modern campus for US study-abroad students. Delivering a complete electrical package, Freeman Electrical Services faced the challenging task of integrating modern technology for a state-of-the- art educational facility into an historic structure. Works included the installation of modern lighting technology delivering precise, glare-free illumination, full Cat 6a ICT structured cabling with Wi-Fi access points, UPS, site-wide electrical distribution and all general service requirements. The Co Kerry contractor wired all mechanical systems including heat pump,
heat recovery, underfloor heating, air conditioning and BMS building control systems. Both wired and wireless access control systems were installed, alongside solar PV, medical trunking, CCTV and intruder alarms, an analogue addressable fire alarm system for teaching spaces, and general electrical works throughout medical teaching spaces and demonstration rooms, breakout and administration areas and the extensive campus grounds. The main priorities for the electrical installation were to update the functionality of the campus while retaining the authenticity of the original building, providing low-maintenance, durable solutions but also allowing serviceability to all areas. Routing modern electrical and mechanical services through 19th-century buildings required meticulous co-ordination between Freeman Electrical Services and the project architect, consultant engineer,
