Figure E-7: Flowchart of trip relocation between the Downtown Connector, surface streets, and active modes
RESULTS Due to higher numbers of trip relocation from the surface streets (to the I-75/I-85 Downtown Connector and to active modes) than trips relocated to the surface streets (from short highway trips), there is a net reduction in trips on the surface roads. Combining the potential relocation of cut-through trips back to the Downtown Connector in addition to potential mode switch trips on the local network, surface street volumes could be reduced to, on average, approximately 72% of their estimated 2023 volumes. This is a significant decrease and would be highly impactful to traffic operations in an urban area. The table shows the passenger vehicle 2023 AADT estimate for study area local streets, the potential relocation of Downtown Connector trips to surface streets, the potential relocation of local trips to the Downtown Connector, and conversion of vehicle trips to active modes trips.
