PLAN OVERVIEW

KEY STUDY AREA TAKEAWAYS

• Defines a list transportation projects for the region, which feed into ARC’s Transportation Improvement Program (TIP), the short-range list of projects to implement. • Sets out goals that directly tie into the Stitch, including: o Improve Quality of Life at the neighborhood level. o Invest in access to a variety of housing options. o Improve public health through the built environment. o Integrate sound environmental principles. • The City of Atlanta boasts 47.9% overall tree canopy coverage - more than any other major U.S. city that has undertaken a comparable urban forest analysis. • However, the Downtown area of Atlanta has less than 5% tree canopy coverage. • The Stitch has the opportunity to measurably increase tree canopy coverage, enhancing the environmental conditions, pedestrian connectivity, and quality of life for local residents and visitors.

The Atlanta Region’s Plan is a long-range planning document that details the investments that will be made through 2050 to ensure metro Atlanta’s future success and improve the region’s quality of life. The three main focus areas of the plan include World Class Infrastructure; Healthy, Livable Communities; and Competitive Economy.

ARC The Atlanta Region’s Plan

The City of Atlanta contracted researchers at the Center for Geographic Information Systems (CGIS) and the Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development (CQGRD) at Georgia Tech to quantify the existing Urban Tree Canopy in the City. Urban Tree Canopy (UTC) is defined as the layer of leaves, branches, and stems of trees that cover the ground when viewed from above. The goal of this study is to help City decision-makers and stakeholders better understand and manage their forest resources.
