The Best in At-Home Care

HOW TO MAINTAIN A BRILLIANT SMILE

After a treatment or a checkup, we all want our smile to look brilliant for months to come. At-home maintenance and good oral care habits go a long way in keeping your smile looking amazing for months — if not longer. There are many steps you can take to maintain the appearance of your smile and keep it white and bright. When it comes to beverages such as coffee and tea, there is one step you can take that a lot of people don’t think about.

and cheeks. Mouthwash helps remove bacteria from all of these areas where your toothbrush will rarely, if ever, touch. One of the reasons I developed the Oral Essentials line of products was to create a group of products that worked together to maintain a healthy mouth, from the teeth to the gums. Our mouthwash, for example, contains Dead Sea salt. This mineral helps clean your mouth while keeping the good bacteria alive.

Many of us, of course, cannot live without a cup or two of coffee or tea. These two beverages are immensely popular, but they will stain your teeth over time. To help curb staining, simply drink coffee or tea through a vented lid. Vented lids come in many varieties. Most, but not all, cafés and coffee houses offer vented lids on their to-go cups. Even if you plan on staying at the café, you can request a to-go cup to ensure you get a vented lid. Alternatively, bringing your own coffee cup with a vented lid is another great option because it helps reduce waste at the same time. For cold beverages, such as juices and many kinds of tea, drinking out of a straw will help keep staining compounds away from your front teeth. If you can, use a paper straw. Paper straws are biodegradable and will not only help maintain the appearance of your teeth, but are also much better for the environment than plastic straws. In terms of reducing cavities between checkups, the best thing you can do is lower your sugar intake. Sugar in all forms is one of the leading causes of cavity development. If you do eat or drink something sugary, always rinse your mouth out afterward and brush your teeth as soon as you can. When it comes to brushing and flossing, we all know how important it is to brush at least twice a day and floss once. But it’s also just as important to rinse your mouth with a mouthwash. Brushing and flossing only clean 24 percent of your mouth’s surface area. You still need to clean your tongue, lower gums,

That’s right — not all bacteria in the mouth are bad. This is why you don’t want to use a mouthwash that is overly harsh. You want to brush and rinse away the harmful bacteria, but you also want to maintain the good bacteria. These good bacteria actually fight harmful bacteria and even help reduce certain kinds of infections. Another reason mouthwash is so important is hydration, especially for people who suffer from dry mouth. Dry mouth is a major cause of cavities and tooth decay. Dry mouth can also exacerbate staining from coffee, tea, and wine. When you want to maintain your smile after a treatment or between checkups, dry mouth can make that challenging. Dry mouth is a side effect of many kinds of medication, and it is also caused by allergies. This is why we offer hydrating mouthwash. This mouthwash encourages saliva production, which helps keep your teeth healthy. Saliva is a natural defense mechanism and does a lot to keep cavities and decay at bay. You could say a hydrated mouth is a healthier mouth! And speaking of Oral Essentials, I am excited to introduce a brand-new look for the line. We recently refreshed the design, and the products are now available in stores and online. You will get toothpaste, mouthwash, whitening strips, and bamboo toothbrushes — a winning combination of products to help maintain your smile day in and day out.

SEAL OF APPROVAL Do 4 out of 5 Dentists Really Recommend Chewing Gum?

We’ve all seen the commercials: An attractive spokesperson holds up a pack of gum and happily boasts, “4 out of 5 dentists recommend our brand!” This is surely bogus, right? Everyone knows sugar is bad for your teeth, so why would dentists ever recommend chewing gum? It may be because that particular gum doesn’t actually contain any sugar. Candies like caramels and lollipops are public enemy No. 1 when it comes to tooth health, but many types of chewing gum contain non-cavity- causing sweeteners like aspartame, sorbitol, or mannitol. Because of the absence of sugar, chewing gum can be surprisingly good for your teeth.

help prevent tooth decay. Other studies suggest that gum may also help remineralize teeth, reduce decay and plaque, and prevent or even reverse gingivitis. How do you know if you are buying sugary candy or cavity-fighting super gum? Check the label for the American Dental Association (ADA) Seal of Acceptance. The ADA Seal is awarded to companies or products that are able to produce “scientific evidence that demonstrates the safety and efficacy of its product, which the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs carefully evaluates according to objective requirements.” Basically, if companies can prove their product helps your teeth in some way, their product may earn a seal of approval.

The act of chewing increases your mouth’s flow of saliva. This may sound a little gross, but saliva helps break down the food you eat, neutralizing the enamel-destroying acid produced by bacteria in plaque. When you chew gum after meals, you actively help combat harmful oral bacteria. Clinical studies have found that chewing sugarless gum for 20 minutes after a meal can

Chewing gum cannot replace regular brushing and flossing, but it can help protect your teeth between brushings. TURN BACK THE CLOCK

Recapture the Youthful Glow of Your Smile With Anti-Aging Dentistry

Time can take a major toll on our teeth. As we eat, drink, and live life to the fullest, our teeth can start to show signs of wear. These days, more and more people drink a cup of coffee or tea in the morning. They have green tea in the afternoon. They enjoy a glass of red wine with dinner. Day after day, these beverages, along with many colorful foods, stain the surfaces of our teeth, making our pearly whites become dull and gray. Discoloration and staining aren’t the only things that age our smiles. Over time, enamel wears down and our teeth can chip and crack. Even the alignment of our teeth can change with time. You may brush, floss, and rinse every single day, and yet you find that your teeth continue to lose the luster they once had. Thanks to major advancements in anti-aging dentistry, even the dullest teeth can be restored to their previous luster. Dr. Maddahi has brought together cutting-edge technology with the latest techniques and treatments to restore aging smiles to their youthful glow.

Safety and Savings Much like resorts and airfare, cruise lines discount their Caribbean fares significantly during peak hurricane season, from August to October. However, unlike a traditional hotel, these massive ships have the luxury of navigating out of a storm’s path with ease. For all their ferocity, hurricanes move slowly across the Atlantic and have relatively predictable trajectories. Meanwhile, modern cruise ships carry the most sophisticated weather- tracking instruments, allowing them to bypass even small storms and inclement weather.

BOOK A CARIBBEAN CRUISE Safe Sailing This Hurricane Season

Flexibility Is a Must The flipside of this ability to dodge storms is the fact that your ship may not be able to stick to its original itinerary. You may have to anchor at an island you weren’t expecting to or miss out on seeing a port you were supposed to visit. If you have your heart set on seeing a specific location, cruise travel this time of year may not be for you. But if you are simply looking for a safe, affordable vacation to a beautiful region, then it doesn’t much matter which white-sanded beach you wake up to next. While unpredictable weather will always be a concern for any vacation, the safety and variety cruises offer make them great options for anyone looking for a Caribbean getaway before the holiday season. So if you have a flexible schedule and a healthy sense of adventure, it’s time to call your travel agent, pack your sunscreen and bathing suit, and head to paradise!

After last year’s devastating storm season, would-be tropical travelers are undoubtedly hesitant about purchasing those discounted plane tickets to the Caribbean Basin. No one wants to face a possible evacuation during their vacation — or worse, be forced to weather a hurricane at a beachfront resort. If you want the most bang for your buck while enjoying the turquoise waters of the Caribbean this fall, consider booking a cruise. Cruise-ship travel is a fun and adventurous way to explore any time of year. After all, what could be more magical than a floating hotel room where you fall asleep in one country and wake up in another? This charming mobility is also what makes cruise travel the safest option for visiting the Caribbean and the coast of Mexico this time of year.
