Thinking Matters

Pol itics Sporting one of the most sought-after ties in the College, the Politics Society has boomed in the past few years. Meetings alternate between discussion of current political affairs and over-arching thematic topics. Questions have included: ‘Is there room for morality in Foreign policy?’, ‘Does the concept of class still matter in British politics?’ and ‘Is the Civil Service still a servant?’

‘More than anything else, the Politics Society is an example of what J.S. Mill might have called the ‘Ideas Market’. Every boy has the chance to present his own views for scrutiny and challenge the opinions of others, whether his opponent happens to be a fellow pupil, a teacher or even an elected politician.’ Will Spence, Year 13

The Society also enjoys hearing from a huge range of guest speakers, recently including David Laws MP, Lord Peter Hennessy, Peter Riddell OA, Andrew Mitchell MP, Timothy Otty QC, Nigel Farage OA MEP and John Healey MP. We also collaborated with the Modern Languages department to hold a seminar on the development of nationalism in Europe, something that we aim to repeat in future years.

The Politics Society gather to hear Andrew Mitchell MP in the Masters’ Library.
