UCL Estates

UCL Estates manages the estate and facilities infrastructure from the strategic to the operational, across property acquisition and management, capital projects, engineering and maintenance, environmental sustainability, safety, security, cleaning and including student residences and central room bookings. UCL manages 4,074 student rooms across 21 residences, three which provide catered accommodation, with a further 2,000 rooms held under nomination agreements.

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Purpose

The UCL Accommodation team is seeking to recruit a dynamic and creative individual to join our award winning communications team. The post holder will support the Communications Manager in implementing the department’s Communications Strategy, as well as contribute to the development, implementation, management and evaluation of student communication and engagement activities and initiatives.

This is a diverse role suitable for a self- starter, who can identify key audiences, and is able to design and/or utilize the most appropriate digital tactics for communicating with a wide range of stakeholders.

The post holder must be someone eager to learn, develop, and keen to make an impact on the life of students residing with UCL. UCL is a globally recognised Institution and one of the UK’s most successful Universities. The Accommodation team sits within the UCL Estates division, and comprises of over 20 Halls that houses more than 6500 residents. UCL Accommodation has set out an ambitious new vision of becoming the leading provider of accommodation in the Higher Education sector; delivering an exceptional student experience and is embarking on a new strategy to deliver this vision. Student engagement is at the very heart of this strategy.

MAIN DUTIES

• Developing and embedding a content strategy for UCL Accommodation’s website with a view of how this can be integrated across all UCL Accommodation platforms including social media • Drafting and formatting web content using CMS • Developing, editing, scheduling content, ensuring this is informative, engaging, audience targeted, and accessible • Setting up and managing mechanisms and processes for checking and refreshing content • Sourcing and editing pictures for the web (ideally using Adobe Creative Suite or similar) • Providing relevant web analytics to support the Communications Manager • Collaborating with internal and external audiences on Web, digital and wider departmental campaigns to enhance student experience • Using user testing, feedback and analytics to optimise content and ensure that the user experience is as smooth as possible • Ensuring that web projects are delivered on schedule and to high standard • Commissioning projects and managing external consultants • Supporting the development of high quality student recruitment digital campaigns, in conjunction with the Communications team • Supporting the Communications and Student Experience team in ensuring the correct use of application of the UCL Accommodation brand • Assisting UCL Accommodation with third party digital content curation and distribution of content • Assisting the department’s Communications Manager with the organisation of events such as open days and the moving in weekend. General responsibilities • The post holder will familiarise themselves and actively follow UCL’s data protection policy in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulations (GDPR) • The post holder will actively follow UCL policies including Equal Opportunities policies • The post holder will maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health & safety Regulations • The post holder may be required to undertake any other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the job as requested by the line manager

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Knowledge, skills and attitude required Essential • Content design and digital production basics • Understanding of effective writing styles for digital and print, and for different audiences • Flawless grammar and spelling, with excellent attention to detail • Excellent proofreading skills • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal. • Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise and manage own workload and adapt work and focus as urgent needs arise • Good analytical and problem-solving skills • Good computing skills, including MS office packages and good working knowledge of Adobe suite products including InDesign and Photoshop • Familiarity of using website performance software, such as Google Analytics, to monitor website use and inform development • Experience of working in a content management system (such as Drupal or WordPress) • Knowledge of SEO • Experience of creating and distributing digital publications and media content and adapting for multichannel use • Experience of creating or maintaining websites, using a content management system • A positive pro-active attitude especially when faced with new challenges • Ability to work well both independently and within a team with a willingness to take on responsibility • Ability to form good relationships with people external to the faculty such as consultants, UCL Accommodation residents, the wider student population, and other UCL staff members. Desirable • Familiarity with multimedia editing packages, such as the Adobe Suite package • Experience of communications in a Higher Education context • Brand management experience • An understanding of what student experience means in practice and how it relates to the job purpose.

Salary level The salary range for this post is £28,574 to £36,291 (inclusive of London weighting). The permanent base for each of the posts is at Bidborough House, in UCL Estates’ recently refurbished, modern, open-plan offices. Given the scale and nature of the UCL Estates post holders will be expected to work across the UCL portfolio as the needs of the role dictate.
