but white T-shirts with a big red “ L” embossed on the front were substituted for red ones. New to the missionary pro gram, the advertising executive remarked, “ I found myself hold ing my breath. Would they take to the candies, or would they turn up their noses at them? I remem bered missionaries at the jungle base cautioning us on being over ly optimistic about the Indians’ liking the candy. After all, their only real previous experience had been with the sweet taste of jungle fruit.”

plied, “ From Luden’s standpoint, very much so. This whole venture was planned with the intent that publicity would be secondary to the missions’ purpose. . . . And, from my own point of view, the experience of living with the In dians and seeing the progress they have made and are making under the guidance of the mis sionaries was wonderful. I think the trip was also a success from the Shapras’ point of view. When we were leaving, Tariri thanked us for coming because we had brought joy to their lives, and

Jean Shepherd (left), and Doris Cox enjoy conversation with an Indian who was visiting Tariri’s tribe when the “Candy party" arrived

There was no question about Shapras’ liking the beads and T-shirts, but they were not sure about the candy. They would pick up chocolate bars and jelly beans, sniff them and then put them down again. The ice was broken when Doris Cox suggested that one of the visitors munch on a candy bar himself. When he did, the Shapras dug into the pile of candy and followed suit. “Before you knew it, the jungle floor looked just like a living room floor on Christmas morning — it was littered with wrappers and pack ages. They really do have a sweet tooth.” Asked if he considered the trip a success, Leigh Chamberlain re

asked would we please come back again. The candy was given to Barry Farber so that he in turn could use it to bring happiness to others. Therefore, I think we can say—mission accomplished.” In this unique means of bring ing the secular business world di rectly to the mission field, Chris tians can rejoice in this “ first hand” positive testimony. What better way to see the transform ing grace o f the Gospel than here in the lives of former savages. It is prayerfully hoped that similar expeditions can be developed in the future to this and other fields of the world where the message of eternal life is reaching be nighted souls for Christ.
