A Hidden Gem in Citrus County
Step back in time and experience the charm of Old Florida in Floral City , home to Citrus County’s only historic district listed on the National Register of Historic Places. With a rich heritage rooted in the phosphate mining boom of the early 1900s, Floral City once boasted a population larger than Miami’s. Today, it proudly preserves its small-town spirit and natural beauty. Named for its abundance of wildflowers, Floral City was mapped out in May 1882 and officially registered as a town on June 3, 1907. Visitors are drawn to its vintage charm and community pride, reflected in seasonal
events like Candles 'n Carols during the holidays, the popular Strawberry Festival and Heritage Days, celebrating local history. These festivities give locals and visitors a glimpse of authentic Florida hospitality. A highlight of downtown Floral City is the breathtaking Avenue of the Oaks, a canopy of majestic, moss-draped oak trees. Along this scenic stretch lies the Historic Duval-Metz House, considered the oldest continuously occupied home in Citrus County, with records dating back to circa 1863. This beautifully preserved, porch-over-porch wood-frame house offers guided tours,
allowing visitors to experience 19th-century Florida life firsthand. Outdoor lovers will enjoy the Withlacoochee State Trail, which
passes directly through Floral City. This 46-mile paved trail, converted from a former railroad bed, is perfect for hiking, biking, walking and horse- back riding. Surrounded by natural beauty, the trail offers a peaceful es-
cape and a chance to explore Florida’s diverse landscapes.
Ferris Groves: A Sweet Slice of Florida
No visit to Floral City is complete without stopping by Ferris Groves. When L.G. "Doc" Ferris arrived in 1925 with dreams of building a golf community, fate had other plans. After the real estate market collapsed, Doc turned to the fertile local soil—and made history by planting citrus trees. After devastating freezes in the 1980s, Ferris Groves adapted by planting strawberries and blueberries, creating the now-famous "Ferris Berry." Today, the Ferris Groves store is a favorite for both locals and visitors. Open November through April, it offers fresh-picked strawberries and blueberries, gourmet items, homemade strawberry pies, tarts, shortcakes, and milkshakes. Be sure to enjoy the fresh-squeezed Florida orange juice and send a taste of Florida to friends and family with gift fruit shipping.
