A s we celebrate with Gordon Cresswell on his 80th birthday, it’s a good time to reflect on the tremendous impact he has made on the payroll industry – not just within the United Kingdom (UK), but on a global scale. Gordon is a visionary, a pioneer, and above all, an inspiring leader who transformed payroll from a behind-the- scenes function to a respected, critical field with a clear professional identity. His work in founding the CIPP is just one chapter in a lifelong commitment to promoting excellence in payroll. A vision for payroll excellence Gordon’s journey in payroll began with his co-founding of the Association of Payroll

and Superannuation Administrators, the first payroll membership organisation in the UK designed to serve the public sector. Recognising the need for representation across sectors, he later co- founded a chartered body that continues to set high standards and champion payroll professionals in both the UK and beyond – a body that would become the CIPP. Under Gordon’s leadership as a
board member, the CIPP became a pillar for payroll professionals, advocating for promptness, accuracy and compliance as the cornerstones of payroll excellence. In the years since, the CIPP has grown into a beacon of professionalism, providing resources, training, guidance and representation for payroll professionals everywhere.
