He had the foresight to recognise the critical role payroll professionals play in every business, and he worked tirelessly to build an organisation that could support, advocate for and educate payroll practitioners. A mentor and friend Having had the privilege of serving on the CIPP board alongside Gordon, I experienced first-hand his wisdom, generosity and passion for payroll. As a mentor, Gordon was unflagging in his support, consistently offering guidance, encouragement and practical advice. In my roles with the CIPP – as a member, tutor, board member and later chair of the board – Gordon’s support was invaluable.

I owe much of my own professional journey in payroll to his mentorship. His belief in my abilities often carried me through challenging times and without his friendship and steady encouragement, my role would have been infinitely harder. Gordon exemplified the CIPP’s mission and values and he ensured that these values permeated every aspect of the organisation. His contributions and dedication to the Institue of British Payroll Managers, which ultimately became the CIPP, also had a deeply personal impact on my own career. Gordon’s belief in his vision never wavered, even when faced with setbacks. His determination to pursue his vision has given all of us in the payroll profession an organisation that continues to grow and inspire.
