Cameron noted that during the 2022-23 fiscal year, the OPP received 422 mental health-related calls in the region. That num- ber increased to 545 calls between the 2024-25 fiscal year. Just as the provincial election campaign kicks-off, the Province of Ontario is an- nounced more than $125,000 in funding to enhance the Mobile Crisis Response Teams (MCRT) at the Hawkesbury and Russell County Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) detachments. Before Ontario Premier Doug Ford drop- ped the writ, signaling a winter election, Glengarry-Prescott-Russell Member of Pro- vincial Parliament (MPP) Stéphane Sarrazin announced that the provincial government is allocating $125,731 to support the two OPP detachments’ MCRT teams. The program is designed to provide rapid assessment and stabilization for individuals in crisis within the community. These teams, which include men- tal health professionals, respond alongside patrol officers to assist with de-escalation, diversion from medical intervention where possible, and transition to acute care when required to help ensure positive outcomes for those in crisis. The MCRT program aims to help police services better leverage local mental health expertise when responding to calls involving individuals experiencing mental health or addiction crises. February began in Hawkesbury with the Roadrunners Athletics Club`s Second Annual Winter Classic.
