It Was Like Home
By Pedro Acevedo Internal Communication
As an MAA associate for over 12 years, Andrea Brent of Memphis, TN, was already familiar with the Open Arms Foundation. She frequently heard about the charity’s work, participated in Open Arms October and supported the organization through her biweekly payroll deductions. But she never imagined how the same charity she quietly supported would one day provide her family with a lifeline during their most difficult time. When her eldest daughter, Kierstyn, began feeling sick two years ago, their world turned upside down. Kierstyn, then 22, had to put her college education on hold as she faced a long and grueling journey to uncover the cause of her illness and search for treatment. After months of hospital stays and uncertainty, doctors in Memphis referred the family to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, TN. There, Kierstyn was diagnosed with a rare and life- threatening autoimmune disease. The diagnosis brought clarity, but it also brought new challenges: Kierstyn’s survival depended on a stem cell transplant and a subsequent recovery period requiring the family to live near the hospital for at least 100 days. After three stressful months of searching for a matching donor, one was found, and that’s when Open Arms stepped in to help.
Kierstyn & Andrea Brent
A Beacon of Hope in Difficult Times Kierstyn’s case manager at Vanderbilt recommended a familiar organization to Andrea: Open Arms. After coordinating the dates and completing the application, the timing was providential — an Open Arms home was just becoming available minutes away from the hospital. While Kierstyn remained in Nashville with Andrea’s husband to prepare for her transplant, Andrea returned to Memphis to pack for the months ahead. She drove to Nashville alone, her car packed to capacity with everything they might need. Stepping into the Open Arms apartment for the first time, Andrea felt an overwhelming sense of relief.

Open Arms home at MAA Charlotte Ave
“It was good to have things that make you have a focus on something else other than her illness. It was just very comforting,” Andrea shared. “The apartment was close to grocery stores, restaurants, and the hospital. It was so convenient and safe. Really a good home away from home.” The Human Touch Beyond the physical comforts, the Brents were deeply touched by the kindness of the Open Arms staff and the MAA community. Maintenance technicians treated Andrea like a neighbor, promptly addressing even minor issues, while the leasing office staff went out of their way to ensure her experience was smooth and welcoming. "When I opened the door, it was like home. Everything was there — bed linens, extra toiletries, cleaning supplies, everything needed for cooking, furniture for when my husband and other daughter visited, and even accommodations for our dog, who joined us multiple times. It was everything we needed to feel comfortable, and everyone was incredibly nice.” From March to July, the Open Arms apartment at the MAA Charlotte Ave community became home. Despite the intensity of the situation, small moments of normalcy brought comfort. Andrea and Kierstyn spent quiet mornings on the patio breathing the fresh air, watching people at the pool, and even watched fireworks from the parking garage on the Fourth of July.
06
"Everyone was so nice. They were genuinely excited to see me and willing to help with anything I needed, even little issues like small bed adjustments or replacing a filter,” says Andrea. “The leasing office staff were super excited every time I would walk in the door. Whatever I needed, they helped me.” Thankful and On the Mend Today, Kierstyn is thriving. While she continues to visit Vanderbilt monthly for follow-ups and tests, her strength is steadily returning. She has undergone physical therapy to regain her mobility and energy and is excited to resume her senior year in January as a biomedical engineering major.
"She’s getting better every day," Andrea says with pride. "The further we get from the transplant, the closer she gets to being 100%."
As Kierstyn continues her journey of recovery, Andrea remains profoundly grateful for the sanctuary Open Arms provided. She also expressed heartfelt appreciation for those who supported her family during this trying time.
“First, I want to thank everyone at the MAA Charlotte community, from the maintenance techs to the office staff, and in particular, the Assistant Property Manager, Chelsea Johnson, and leasing consultants Kailey Sheffield and Zane Wilkinson,” Andrea expresses. “A big thank you to Beth Johnson, Executive Assistant and Open Arms Representative, who was always there assisting with everything Open Arms-related. Finally, my family and I would like to thank every one of my coworkers in Accounts Payable and GL Accounting, including Terri Farley, Senior Treasury Analyst; Jackie Meadows, Executive Assistant; Koresa Taylor, Director Operational Accounting; and Steven Brodkey, VP Accounting, for your prayers, texts, cards, and special gifts,” Andrea lists.
“Everything you did for me made it easier for me to be there for Kierstyn. I can never thank you enough!”
Andrea’s story is a testament to the transformative power of the Open Arms Foundation. Since its founding in 1995, Open Arms has provided nearly 314,687 nights of rest to families like Andrea’s, offering fully furnished apartments near medical facilities at no cost to families in medical need. And with your support, we hope to continue providing a place of comfort, care, and hope to families when the need it the most.

A Heart in Need Finding a Home & Healing
During Stella Luna’s six-year career with MAA, she and her family were dedicated supporters of the Open Arms Foundation. While she worked for MAA, Stella passionately supported Open Arms with payroll contributions and community fundraising events. At the start of 2023, Stella noticed some changes in her health. A few months later, she learned that she needed a heart transplant, which sadly necessitated her leaving her MAA position.
The transplant also meant that she would need to temporarily move closer to her treatment team and hospital pre-transplant. Due to her extensive work and knowledge of Open Arms, she thought to reach out to the MAA teams that she had worked with over the years to see if she would qualify for an Open Arms home.
“As someone who had the privilege of working with Open Arms and MAA in the past, helping with fundraising, “ says Stella, “I never imagined that one day I would be on the receiving end of the incredible assistance you offer.”

Stella and family
Soon after applying for an Open Arms home, MAA Atlantic in Jacksonville, FL, became home to Stella and her daughter for 14 months. At MAA Atlantic, she was able to get settled before her surgery and recovered peacefully afterward in their new “home away from home.” Stella expressed her appreciation for being able to remain with her family during her recovery. In August 2023, Stella went through a successful heart transplant. The financial relief and housing stability removed any unnecessary stress during a much- needed recovery period, which also allowed her to remain close to her doctors. “I am deeply thankful to MAA Atlantic for all their efforts in making me as comfortable as possible throughout my recovery,” Stella says. “Your kindness and generosity made a world of difference when it was needed most.” Today, Stella is transitioning toward a new chapter after completing the most difficult part of her recovery in early 2024. While Stella is currently unable to return to work with MAA due to her health, she expresses her deepest gratitude for her time with the company and continues to support Open Arms. It was, as Stella puts it, “truly humbling to be on both sides.”

MAA Belmere Providing Hope, One Family at a Time
By Jessica Meder Assistant Property Manager MAA Tampa Oaks
Since 1997, MAA Belmere has proudly provided a welcoming home to families supported by Open Arms. Located in sunny Tampa, FL, MAA Belmere provides a peaceful retreat with its serene pool, tranquil lakes and local wildlife, making it the perfect place to relax while remaining close to many of the hospitals partnered with Open Arms.
Denise Thomas
Denise Thomas, Property Manager at MAA Belmere since 2012, has always held Open Arms close to her heart. She often shares that supporting Open Arms is the most rewarding aspect of her role at MAA. Over the years, one particular story stands out to her as a reminder of the program's impact. “The most memorable story about Open Arms is a family that would return each year so their son could receive medical care at Shriners Hospital for Children,” Denise recalls. “The family from Honduras had a very young son who was unable to walk. I remember when I first met them, the father brought him into the office in his arms. They were taking him to the hospital to get fitted for a specialized electric wheelchair. They returned each year for about 3 years as the little boy’s body changed for medical care. On the very last day of their final stay in our Open Arms apartment, the whole family came to the office to say goodbye. The father called to the son and told them to come in and give me a hug. Instead of seeing him in a large electric wheelchair, he walked into my office with specialized leg braces and arm crutches to give me a hug. His family and I had tears of joy that day. ”
Denise reflects, “This is why our Open Arms Foundation means so much to me. I'm blessed to see how the foundation truly helps people.”
10
A Team Effort to Support Open Arms The entire MAA Belmere team participates in Open Arms. Lori Kolb, Assistant Property Manager at MAA Belmere, is equally passionate about the program. “I am very proud to work for a company that is willing and able to help those in need,” says Lori. “It gives me satisfaction to be able to assist individuals, who at a tragic time in their life, find a home where they can live and feel comfortable in."
Lori Kolb
Each year, MAA Belmere actively participates in fundraising for Open Arms. Lori helps organize the annual pumpkin patch fundraiser, inviting residents to contribute and show their support. Denise is also instrumental in coordinating the semi-annual Coastal Division Golf Tournament, which raised an impressive $117,000 in 2023 alone! More Than Just Fundraising While fundraising is essential to sustaining Open Arms, the MAA Belmere team’s dedication goes beyond financial support. They provide the compassion and care that truly make an Open Arms apartment feel like a home. Their commitment ensures that families not only have a place to stay but also experience the comfort and support they need during a difficult time. Everyone is incredibly grateful for MAA Belmere and all the amazing property teams that make Open Arms possible. Their hard work, compassion and dedication help us create a lasting impact on the families who rely on this vital program.

Open Arms: A Legacy of Support
By Beth Johnson Executive Assistant & Open Arms Representative
Open Arms has gone through many changes and improvements over the years, eventually growing to include 54 homes total in 2024. Throughout three decades, what has remained a constant is the generous support of MAA and the spirited involvement of MAA associates through fundraising and payroll contributions. The program has impacted the lives of thousands of guests and their loved ones, providing not only a restful home away from home but also a means to financially keep their lives intact while they are undergoing medical treatment. The longevity and impact of Open Arms truly show why it is considered the “heart” of MAA.
Frank McRae, former MAA Director of Community Outreach and Open Arms champion
For the past thirty years, Open Arms has been the cornerstone of MAA’s commitment to supporting families in need of medical care. Since its inception by the MAA Board of Directors in 1994, Open Arms has provided a safe and supportive home for thousands of families who must travel long distances to receive treatment. In November 1995, the first six Open Arms units were opened in Irving, TX; Jacksonville, FL; Memphis, TN; Columbia, SC; Jackson, MS; and Chattanooga, TN. In 1996, Reverend Frank McRae joined MAA as Director of Community Involvement, which included leading the Open Arms program. McRae introduced Open Arms on a larger scale by expanding the program to more cities. In recognition of the spirit and leadership McRae brought to Open Arms, each year at the MAA Annual Leadership Conference, the Frank McRae Humanitarian Award is given to a deserving MAA associate.

Open Arms Corn Hole Tournament
By Laura Wilson Administrative Assistant
For the 8th Annual Corn Hole Tournament in Charlotte, NC, we had a great turnout with 24 teams and around 20 spectators to cheer on their favorite teams! MAA vendor Rejuven8 placed 1st as the overall winner, and the event raised nearly $30,000 for Open Arms!
The event was a great success and was made possible by our sponsors. Watermark, Mecklenburg Roofing and 1st Choice Construction were our top sponsors for the event. We also had several vendors that have supported us in the past come back again this year, including RediCarpet, HD Supply, Carpet South, Real Floors, Loebsack & Brownlee, ATI and Matrix Fire.
It’s hard to believe this was the 8th year for our corn hole tournament, and it has come such a long way! We originally started in the parking lot of a local restaurant, with around 15 teams and only four sets of boards, and raised roughly $1,200. Over the years we have grown in both size and donations and cannot wait to see what next year’s tournament will bring.

Nashville Topgolf
By Laura Wilson Administrative Assistant
The 2nd annual Open Arms Top Golf event was a great success. The event featured 20 bays with six players each, a delicious barbecue dinner, and a Longest Drive competition for trophies. The winners were thrilled with their prizes! TSI served as the Diamond Sponsor with a generous contribution of $7,500, which also included a 3-month Top Golf membership valued at $1,500.
This year, the event time was shifted to 4–7 PM, allowing for an additional 16 participants, bringing the total to 120 players. The event raised just over $32,000.
Large events like this require careful planning and a long lead time. The venue was booked in March/April, and fundraising and sponsorship sales began in late July. It was found that involving all team members in the region contributed significantly to the success. The initial challenge with events is the first annual, but each subsequent annual event becomes easier. The Nashville team is looking forward to a 3rd Annual Topgolf event in 2025!

West Division Golf Tournament
By Laura Wilson Administrative Assistant
The West Division is proud to host an annual golf tournament in support of Open Arms, and it’s an event everyone looks forward to each year. Volunteers, golfers and vendors all come together to make it a fantastic experience, and this year was no exception! With 165 golfers and almost $185,000 raised for Open Arms, it was a resounding success. Even a downpour during the tournament couldn’t dampen the spirits of the participants. A special thank you to our top sponsor, HD Supply, and to other major
sponsors, including Superior Floors, Mohawk Industries, MFI, T&M and Greater Dallas Renovations. We’re already excited for next year’s tournament!

North Division Online Auction
We hosted the 5th Annual Open Arms Online Silent Auction for the North Division this November. Properties across the division partnered with vendors to collect donations for the auction. Auction items included a week vacation stay at Cypress Village, a Nespresso machine, Amazon Gift Cards, a patio heater, Solo Stove, Frigidaire Nugget Ice Maker, Blackstone Grill and much more!
We collected just over 75 items for the auction. Shout out to the teams at MAA Kirby Station, Market Station, MAA Dexter Lake, MAA Edgewater, and MAA Providence Main for helping to earn over $7,100 for Open Arms!

East Division Golf Classic On October 4, we hosted our 2nd Annual D.C., Maryland and Virginia Golf Tournament at the beautiful Augustine Golf Club in Stafford, VA, and it was an overwhelming success! With around 100 participants joining the scramble-style event, the turnout far exceeded our expectations. The weather was perfect, and even had someone hit a hole-in-one to win a vacation to a Texas Golf Resort!
Participants started their day with a hearty breakfast before the shotgun start. After a successful round of golf, everyone gathered for a celebratory lunch at the clubhouse, where several well-deserved awards were handed out. We’re grateful for the dedication of everyone involved and look forward to even greater success in future events!
Thanks to the incredible support from our sponsors and volunteers, we managed to raise nearly $50,000 more than last year, bringing the event total to nearly $136,000, something that organizers are incredibly proud of accomplishing.

8th Annual Open Arms October
By Beth Johnson Executive Assistant & Open Arms Representative
Open Arms is the heart of MAA every month, but especially each October. The annual Open Arms October event has the goal of promoting awareness for the Open Arms Foundation and offering fun ways for MAA associates, residents, friends, and family to get involved with our corporate charity. This year’s event marked our 8th Annual, and it was the best yet!
During the first week of October, an emphasis was placed on Open Arms awareness and where to find program presence online through the www.maaopenarms.com website, Open Arms Facebook page and the online giving site. Information was also provided to associates about the importance of associate payroll contributions. By the end of the month, nearly 450 associates were supporting Open Arms with payroll contributions, providing great sustainer support for the program.
During the second week of October, many MAA vendors and residents contributed by donating support “pumpkins” that adorned the walls of leasing offices everywhere. MAA community teams had fun growing their “pumpkin patches”, knowing that each pumpkin represents additional funding for the program, as well as an opportunity to start a conversation about Open Arms and the homes we provide to those who must travel for medical treatment. Week 3 included a 2nd Annual Online Silent Auction for the Corporate Division that raised nearly $4,000, and hundreds of community fundraisers, including donut drives, harvest festivals, bake sales, spaghetti dinners and much, much more! During the last week of October, MAA associates and residents were informed about all the ways Open Arms collects “passive” fundraising dollars, including Kroger Community Rewards®, SparkGood from Walmart.com, GotSneakers campaigns, ShopRaise, Benevity and the PayPal Giving Fund. Associates were additionally provided a banner graphic to post on their own social media pages in support of Open Arms.
Throughout October, combined efforts raised just over $91,000, making it the most successful Open Arms October in the history of the event!

4th Annual Open Arms Atlanta Golf Classic
By Marylou Scruggs Regional Vice President South Division
The 4th Annual Open Arms Atlanta Golf Classic took place on April 15, 2024, at the stunning Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, GA. This year, 170 participants enjoyed a perfect day of sunshine, friendly competition, and camaraderie with industry partners and MAA associates.
Following the tournament, guests gathered in the ballroom for a buffet lunch and the award ceremony. We proudly recognized our major sponsors and expressed gratitude to our loyal repeat sponsors whose continued generosity supports this important cause. Prizes were awarded to the top three teams with the lowest scores, as well as for closest to the pin and longest drive. The last-place team received a sleeve of golf balls to keep improving their game, and a special prize went to the player who traveled the farthest to join us.
19
A heartfelt thank you to the many vendors who stepped up and made this event a success. With their support, we raised an impressive $274,752 — an increase of $32,000 over last year. We are incredibly grateful to the MAA Fundraising Team for their dedication to reaching out to our vendors and to all the vendors who donated and participated in this memorable day. The support we receive from our vendor partners in Atlanta is truly remarkable. Looking ahead, plans are already underway for the 5th Annual Open Arms Atlanta Golf Classic, which will return to The Golf Club of Georgia on April 14, 2025. We can’t wait to see everyone there!
