Open Arms: A Legacy of Support
By Beth Johnson Executive Assistant & Open Arms Representative
Open Arms has gone through many changes and improvements over the years, eventually growing to include 54 homes total in 2024. Throughout three decades, what has remained a constant is the generous support of MAA and the spirited involvement of MAA associates through fundraising and payroll contributions. The program has impacted the lives of thousands of guests and their loved ones, providing not only a restful home away from home but also a means to financially keep their lives intact while they are undergoing medical treatment. The longevity and impact of Open Arms truly show why it is considered the “heart” of MAA.
Frank McRae, former MAA Director of Community Outreach and Open Arms champion
For the past thirty years, Open Arms has been the cornerstone of MAA’s commitment to supporting families in need of medical care. Since its inception by the MAA Board of Directors in 1994, Open Arms has provided a safe and supportive home for thousands of families who must travel long distances to receive treatment. In November 1995, the first six Open Arms units were opened in Irving, TX; Jacksonville, FL; Memphis, TN; Columbia, SC; Jackson, MS; and Chattanooga, TN. In 1996, Reverend Frank McRae joined MAA as Director of Community Involvement, which included leading the Open Arms program. McRae introduced Open Arms on a larger scale by expanding the program to more cities. In recognition of the spirit and leadership McRae brought to Open Arms, each year at the MAA Annual Leadership Conference, the Frank McRae Humanitarian Award is given to a deserving MAA associate.
