Takoradi - Cape Coast Castle & El Mina Castle Overnight, the Clipper O moved us from the port at Accra to the port of Takoradi so we could spend the next day visiting places associated with the slavery history of the area, particularly Cape Coast Castle and El Mina Castle--not palaces at all, but forts wherein the poor slaves-to-be languished in huge stone cells until enough of them had been gathered to warrant a slave ship’s arrival to take them aboard. Horrible places where many died before ever getting aboard. Both El Mina and Cape Coast had been built originally as Portuguese forts to protect their trade routes but had morphed over the years through new owners and new purposes until they became the terrible places for which we remember them today.
