in the economy and in attracting foreign investment which usually seeks a fairly educated work force. French is the official language of the country.
Our visit to this interesting country began with a 20 minute ferry ride over to Goree Island just off the mainland. It is a colorful and rather tropical island with about 1500 permanent residents though its attractions for French and other Europeans as a vacation site make the population swell during high tourist season. Though it is now a happy place such was not always the case for it was another of the gathering places for Africans awaiting transport to the New World as slaves. It has a slave auction site as well as colonial buildings which served as housing for the slaves. On the island is the oldest French Catholic Church, the Church of St. Charles Borromee in West Africa and it is still a functioning parish.
