A Conversation About Responsibility Living Better in the New Year A s I look back on the past year and look forward to the year ahead, I think about a conversation I had As a CEO, I want nothing more than to see my team grow as individuals and to help them become even better at what

a few months ago. It was a discussion with Rob Vaughn, University of Maryland’s Head Baseball Coach. Rob will soon be my son Connor’s coach when he heads off to college next year. Rob said that as a coach, he not only wants the team to be great baseball players, but to also understand their roles in life as men, brothers, uncles, and fathers. In that sense, these words got me thinking about 2018 and who I am as a person. I’ve fully embraced my responsibilities as a father to my kids, a husband to my wife, a CEO to my team, and a Wealth Manager to my clients. As a father, I want nothing more than to teach my kids to grow into responsible adults, to help them stay safe and happy, and to realize the opportunities they have ahead of them. As a husband, I want nothing more than to have a great relationship with my wife, Kim, so she always knows she’s secure and has someone to depend on.

they do. I’d like to see them further their opportunities, even if that means exploring options beyond the scope of Campbell Wealth Management. As a Wealth Manager, I want nothing more than to help you accomplish a safe and secure retirement — one you can cherish forever. That might mean developing a retirement plan around experiences, being closer to family, or simply having wonderful relationships with the people you care about the most. The possibilities are endless! To go a step further, as I look at my responsibilities to all those in my life, I’ve realized that part of that responsibility is to help people maintain good health. I’ve talked about health improvement in the past and I believe it’s an important part of our lives. Whether it’s in the lives of my family, my team, or our clients, being healthy puts us in a better position to live to the fullest. I’ll touch more on this point in the months ahead.

Looking forward, we all have to recognize our responsibilities and embrace them. Every one of us has our set of duties that support the people in our lives. It is imperative to think about how we can perform those responsibilities to be better people and to aid those who rely on us. I encourage you to think about your future. What is it that you want to achieve and what is most important to you? Let’s make 2018 an amazing year, even better than the last. From all of us at Campbell Wealth, here’s to a wonderful new year!

Is Your Lifestyle Retirement Ready? Why Rightsizing Makes for Better Life After Work

A s you approach retirement, it is important to make sure your lifestyle is tailored to fit the end of your working life. This concept, known as “rightsizing,” canmake your savings last longer, which provides you with the freedom to enjoy your later years. Kathy Gottberg, author of “Rightsizing: A Smart Living 365 Guide to Reinventing Retirement,” defines the concept as a “conscious choices for a better lifestyle that more closely fits your new needs in retirement.” The earlier you can begin rightsizing, the more prepared you’ll be for the days when you no longer have an income from your job. For most of us, what really matters when we retire is spending time with loved ones and having memorable experiences. Nobody’s greatest regret is not having enough stuff. With that inmind, here are a few tips that will prepare you for a fruitful and fulfilling retirement. Clear Out UnneededGoods If you’ve been in the same home for years or decades, you probably have more stuff than you need. Start by discarding anything that’s broken, damaged, or simply not getting any use. You should also make sure you’re not acting as a storage unit for friends or family members. If they don’t have the space for something, it shouldn’t be your job to hang on to it. Eliminating clutter will free up your space and allow you to treasure what you have.

Move Into aHouse You Can Fill Once all of your children have left the nest, you’ll often find that you don’t need as many rooms. Selling your home and moving into one that isn’t half- empty will generate some extra cash and help you to live more efficiently. As an added bonus, you’ll often find that a cozier home increases happiness. The less time you have to spend on home maintenance, the more you can devote to the activities you love. Change YourMindset Too often, we suffer from the urge to “keep up with the Joneses.” If our neighbor buys something, we want it too. But to really rightsize, you should resist the urge to meet other people’s standards. Retirement should help you make the most of your life, not anyone else’s. Before you make a purchase, especially a large one, ask yourself what’s motivating your decision. If it’s not going to make your life better, leave it on the shelf. When all is said and done, you will have successfully rightsized. But keep in mind rightsizing needs regular maintenance. It’s about forming habits, not making a one-time change. When you can change your habits and keep those habits, you’ll find they become easier over time, and before you know it, you’ll be living a lifestyle that truly makes sense for you!

A Responsible New Year Adventure Is Waiting Wreaths Across America

Are You Ready for Retirement? Give This Hot Chocolate A Try Hear All About Our Scavenger Hunt

Fun Activities to Do in the City of Alexandria! D o you have a family gathering coming up, maybe a family reunion, or even an office gathering with your colleagues? How about hosting a scavenger hunt in the City of Alexandria? to complete a few fun challenges and document themwith a photo or video. Our challenges from the night included: take a photo in front of the best window display, take a photo with the tallest Christmas tree, and sing a Christmas carol inMarket Square.

Recently, the Campbell Wealth Team participated in a small scavenger hunt organized by our CFO, KimCampbell. It began at the Campbell WealthOffice, with a clue that led us to a specific business on or near King Street inOld Town Alexandria.

The most rewarding part of this experience was that each team

was given $100 to give back to the community. There were no restrictions on who or where the donations were handed out to, so each teammade that decision spontaneously during the scavenger hunt. It was a simple act of generosity that was unbelievably rewarding.

Each clever clue lead us to a new location, where another clue had been left with the businesses’ staff (all of whom were so happy to participate in this fun adventure). The seventh and final location was a restaurant where we enjoyed dinner with the team and our spouses. Throughout our adventure to each location, we needed

If you would like to know the clues, locations, and challenges, please feel free to reach out and we will offer that information to you. We hope you will incorporate this into your next group activity. Please enjoy a few of the photos from our scavenger hunt!
