Then, just this past August, we opened our newest location in Washington Park. Watching our community embrace these schools has been nothing short of humbling. who build trust and excitement in every lesson .
Our holistic approach combines technical instruction with a sense of joy and accomplishment. We encourage parents to start their child’s swim journey early—even before their first birthday. Early exposure to water safety builds a foundation that can last a lifetime. And, of course, vigilance around water is essential. Fences, alarms, and knowing CPR are crucial tools that every family should embrace. Our mission extends beyond our pools. Partnering with local hospitals and organizations, we’ve provided complimentary swim lessons for newborns and hosted water safety events throughout Denver. These partnerships are a testament to our belief that every child deserves the chance to learn water safety, regardless of their circumstances. If you’re in the Denver area, I invite you to visit one of our three Goldfish Swim School locations. Join us in making a splash—not just for fun, but for a safer, more confident future for your child. Together, we can empower our children with skills that make a difference.
Superior—I often reflect on our incredible journey to empower children with life-saving swim skills. Teaching kids to swim isn’t just our job; it’s our passion. Whenever I see a child overcome their fear of water, build confidence, and master a new skill, I’m reminded why we do what we do. When we opened Goldfish Swim School Superior in 2019, our mission was simple: to make learning to swim a fun and safe experience for every child. Over the years, we’ve faced challenges, including the disruptions of COVID-19 and the Marshall Fires. Those events tested our resilience and brought out the best in our community. We supported by donating water and supplies to shelters, offering new swim gear to affected families, and even planting 60 trees in Boulder County to aid in the recovery effort. Despite everything, we remained committed to creating a safe haven for children to learn essential water safety skills.
cheerful facilities, and small class sizes, we ensure every child feels comfortable and cared for. Why does this matter? Because drowning is the number one cause of accidental death for children aged 1-4, and the statistics are heartbreaking. According to the CDC, incidents among this age group have increased 30% since 2019. But here’s the good news: formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning by 88%. This isn’t just a statistic to us; it’s a call to action. We know that the safety and confidence of your child start with our team. That’s why we’re dedicated to hiring the best instructors in the business. Offering a starting pay of $20 per hour helps us attract passionate, skilled individuals who share our mission. D r. Lisa Phillips founded Hope Pediatric Dentistry after facing a life-alter- ing crisis in 2014. At nine months pregnant with her second child, and caring for a toddler at home, Lisa’s husband Cody—just 31 years old at the time—was suddenly hospital- ized with severe heart failure. For three intense weeks, he fought for his life in the ICU while Lisa balanced visits to the hospital with the everyday demands of motherhood and work. What kept her going during those darkest days? Hope. Their son, Jaren, had faith his dad would recover and that became her anchor—and ultimately her inspiration. That experience forever shaped Lisa’s purpose and became the founda- tion for the practice she would go on to build—Hope Pediatric Dentistry. CHESS PALS Chess Academy The Faces of
PHOTO CREDIT: LA DOLCE VIDA PHOTOGRAPHY Griffin and Sullivan McConnell
P ALS Chess Academy is one of Colorado’s largest and most trusted chess enrichment programs. Founded in 2012, by 5-time Colorado State Chess Champion and National Master, Lior Lapid, PALS was purchased by the family of two of Lior’s private students, Sullivan and Griffin McConnell. Lior coached Griffin and Sullivan McConnell from being good scholastic chess players to National Masters with 15 Colorado State Chess Championships between them. Griffin and Sullivan are the driving force behind PALS as they continue to compete in chess tournaments around the country and around the world. The McConnell family has a very unique relationship with chess as they believe that it was playing chess that helped save the life of their oldest son Griffin. Griffin learned to play chess when he was 4 years old and started competing and winning scholastic chess tournaments when he was 5. This was the age he also became very sick. Griffin was diagnosed with two rare brain diseases and had to undergo brain surgery to remove the left
hemisphere of his brain at Children’s Hospital of Denver when he was 8. This surgery saved his life but left him with permanent disabilities. Over the next 3 years, Griffin had to relearn how to walk and talk. He was confined to a wheelchair as he slowly relearned how to walk. One week after the surgery, when he was still paralyzed on his entire right side and couldn’t speak, Griffin played his first complete chess game! Only 4 months after his surgery, Griffin entered his first chess tournament. 4 years later he won his first State Scholastic Championship and 3 years later at the age of 15, he was invited to compete in a chess tournament in Ankara, Turkey where he won the best player trophy as the only competitor to win all of his games. He continued to compete and at 17 years old, he finally became a National Master. Griffin has dreamed of becoming a chess coach since he was 7 and now coaches at 8 different schools and has a full load of private students with a healthy waitlist! His private students have already won two Colorado State Scholastic Chess Championships. Chess.com made a documentary about his incredible journey that you can see for free on Youtube, it’s called “Griffin’s Gambit”.
Seeing how much chess has done for Grifiin inspired the entire McConnell family to do a huge life u-turn and invest all ther energy in helping other families discover this great game. Numerous studies have been done here in the US and all around the world showing the benefits of playing chess. These studies show increases in math score by as much as 25%. Chess increases focus and concentration and helps children develop strategic thinking patterns that will benefit them for the rest of their lives. PALS Chess Academy utilizes a curriculum developed by Griffin and his younger brother Sullivan. Last year at the Colorado State Scholastic Chess Championships, PALS students won every single state championship title. They swept with state champions in K-1, K-3, K-5, K-8 and K-12. For the last 13 years consecutively, PALS students have won at least 2 out of the five 5 state titles. For more information about how PALS Chess Academy and chess can help your child, please call 720-504-8765 or visit our website at www.palschess.com.
