Mines help provide key aid

JUNEAU — The mine companies in Southeast Alaska provided imme- diate financial aid and resources to assist relief efforts in Haines. The Hecla Charitable Founda - tion authorized an emergency do- nation of $20,000 to the American Red Cross of Alaska to help Haines residents who have lost their homes or been evacuated due to devastat- ing landslides brought on by historic rainfall. “Greens Creek has long-standing ties to the Haines community where many of our employees and their families live,” said Brian Erickson, Vice President and General Manager of Hecla Greens Creek. “Every one of them has been impacted by this cri- sis, as has every resident of Haines.” “Coeur Alaska is committed to as - sisting our neighbors in Haines with relief efforts after the devastating storm event in December,” Coeur’s Rochelle Lindley said. “We imme- diately offered to send members of our Mine Rescue team to Haines to assist with disaster relief and re- covery efforts; however, the Haines Emergency Operations Center (EOC) determined that they had sufficient outside volunteers, citing lodging capacity concerns and COVID-19 mitigation. “Several Coeur Alaska employees live in Haines and we adjusted their shift schedules so that they could return to Haines to help with relief efforts. As an alternative to provid - ing manpower, we worked with the EOC to donate seven handheld radios so they could better coordinate their disaster response efforts. We are also currently working with the Haines Salvation Army to make a $20,000 donation to support our neighbors in Haines as they recover from the winter storm disaster.” “This is an ongoing crisis with no end in sight,” Erickson said. “This community needs help — and it needs it now and for the foreseeable future. The Greens Creek family en - courages everyone in the region to donate to the relief funds being or- ganized by the Red Cross and Salva - tion Army.” Erickson said the mine is pre- pared to send in its Mine Rescue Teams should they be needed and

to provide what other help it can to Haines’ local government. “Our hearts and prayers are with the community,” Erickson said.

Constantine has also committed $20,000 in financial donations, split between several organizations.
