sign, architecture and crafts with digital and experimen- tal approaches. Vienna Design Week deliberately deviates from the trade fair concept and is not an event that sup- ports direct sales. Its aim is to familiarise visitors with the processes that lie behind the commercial principle. The programme unfolds at various venues throughout the city, shifting the Focus District of the city as the main venue each year. This year, London-based artist Eugene Quinn will address the issues of identity, belonging and homeland. Through the pub quiz “How to be Austrian”, Austrians are invited to take their own test for acquiring Austrian citizenship. “How many of us could really pass the test? Are the questions important to our lives and who composes them?” Quizzes will be held throughout the ten days of the festival in cafés, clubs, schools, local community centres and pensioners’ clubs. Dutch artistic duo Jean-Baptiste Gambier and Hugo Béhérégaray will be guests of the festival with the instal- lation The Destruction Room. Each participant receives protective clothing, the tool of their choice and a min- ute to destroy furniture made of white cardboard. The demolished furniture is then restored under the super- vision of the designer. The concluding of the festival sees the room furnished with white furniture transformed into a multicoloured room. Within the scope of the Urban Food & Design for- mat, the creative power of the design scene is engaged in order to initiate processes of change in various areas of the food industry. The topic of this year’s VDW Chal- lenge is the City as a Resource, while innovative design solutions are developed in cooperation with partners like City Farm Augarten and the City of Vienna’s own brand of organic products, Weiner Gusto. And these are just a few fragments of the fantastic ex- periences that await you in the Austrian capital every year.
