„DEP PROTIV HERD“ / DEPP V. HEARD Tiktok suđenje 21. veka The TikTok trial of the 21 st century Netfliksov dokumentarac otkriva kako je od jednog suđenja napravljena glavna onlajn priča, u kojoj je novi ekosistem nevidljivih komentatora govorio u prilog Džoniju Depu / This Netflix documentary reveals how the trial became a major online story in its own right, while the new ecosystem of invisible commentators spoke out in support of Depp
BEFORE THE JURY DELIV- ERED A UNANIMOUS DECISION in favour of actor Johnny Depp in his defamation case against his ex-wife, Amber Heard, she had already lost. Netflix’s latest documentary series, Depp v. Heard, which unpacks the six- week trial over three episodes, trac- es the negative social media atten- tion and online hatred for Heard that dominated the internet—and poten- tially impacted the trial's end result. The trial began on 11 th April 2022 in Fairfax, Virginia. With cameras be- ing permitted in the courtroom, every moment of the trial was televised, contributing to an online frenzy that only grew more intense as the weeks went on. Like O.J. Simpson’s infa- mous murder trial in 1995, Depp and Heard’s trial became a closely watched and widely discussed media sensa- tion, but it had an added element that Simpson’s trial did not: today’s scale of social media. Memes about the trial started go- ing viral, and the hours-long trial was condensed to thousands of short sec- ond-long clips that received millions of views. Depp v. Heard shows how almost all of this content favoured Depp and much of it came from cre- ators who had a direct benefit. At its height, the hashtag #JusticeForJohn- ny had amassed 20 billion views on TikTok; #JusticeForHeard only had 7.5 million views, according to the documentary. Heard was aware of the online hate. The series shows a moment in the courtroom when she says, “You can look either of us up online and see which one of us is be- ing abused.”
