Grocka na svom grbu baštini grozd belog grožđa, okružen talasima reke i toplim zracima sunca Grocka’s coat of arms honours the heritage with the inclusion of a bunch of white grapes, surrounded by waves of the river and warming rays of sunlight
part of Grocka still being known as Plavinci. Vineyards were even planted here by the ancient Romans, while every homeowner in Grocka has, since medieval times, had to have his own vineyard if he aspires to be a prop- er ‘homeowner host’, which has always been an impor- tant title in this town. The Belgrade Viticulture Region has a rich assort- ment of grape types. And apart from international vari- eties like Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztramin- er, Rhine Riesling, Italian Riesling, Muscat Hamburg, Prokupac, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Ca- bernet Franc, Marselan, Regent etc., Smederevka is still cultivated, as an autochthonous variety that thrives best in the vineyards of Grocka and Smederevo – the famous Zlatni Breg, meaning Golden Hill. When you head towards Grocka along the Smedere- vo Road from the direction of Belgrade and encounter the glimmering scene of one of Belgrade’s most beau- tiful panoramas (and you will feel so enraptured that you’ll think you’ve seen the sea), you will be arriving in this beautiful town beside the Danube, where natural beauty is part of the heritage, just like cultural treasures that describe all eras and periods from prehistoric times to the present day. When you tour the town, be sure to try its grapes or, better yet, drink a glass of local wine!
