ON SERBIA’S SNOW-COVERED PEAKS Everything’s ready for a winter adventure With sub-zero temperatures, gourmet cuisine and hot local rakija brandy, Serbia is a wonderful destination for this time of year. Check it out for yourself! W ith pristine forests, lakes and river can- yons covered in snow, easily accessi- ble ski slopes for all categories of ski- er, wonderful accommodation offers and services, Serbia really should be your choice this winter. Kopaonik is perhaps the coun- try’s most famous and complete ski centre, but some of Serbia’s other mountains could prove to be a better choice, depending on various factors. Apart from this, Serbia’s ski resorts are ideal plac- es to celebrate World Snow Day, which is marked every third Sunday in January (this year on the 15 th ) and was declared by the International Ski Federation. In creat- ing this holiday, the FIS’s idea was to increase the par- ticipation of children in winter sports like skiing and snowboarding, but actually to enable families to togeth- er enjoy the magic of winter. Imagine one huge global snow-fest, which is celebrated worldwide on the same weekend: that’s the vision underpinning World Snow Day. It boasts more than 30 tailored slopes for alpine and Nordic skiing, stretching over an area of more than 60 kilometres. All ski runs on Kopaon- ik are served by a system of more than 20 ski lifts. Both professional skiers and amateurs can find slopes to suit their level, while ski nurseries are provided for children. Another of its attractions is the option of night skiing, which is available on three of its ski lanes, while on cer- tain days during the week it is turned into a sledging run. Another piece of good news is that Kopaonik’s ar- tificial snow systems are working at full throttle. Brit- ish newspaper The Telegraph once included Kopaonik on its list of the top 10 ski resorts in Eastern Europe, and that was primarily due to its wonderfully landscaped ski runs, good entertainment and nightlife, and a large choice of hotels and private accommodation. As much as 97 per cent of this ski resort is covered by an artificial
