Simultaneously cosmopolitan and traditional, timeless and modern, simple and spectacular – Rhodes is a Greek island that has so many faces, and you can discover them all. It has so many highlights that one visit is never enough. The landscape of this Dodecanese island has so much eye-catching beauty that it’s no wonder Rhodes is among Greece’s most popular holiday destinations. This is where vast sand beaches, clear waters, castles and ancient civi- lisations effortlessly mix with gourmet restaurants and tra- ditional tavernas serving local delicacies. Rhodes is a beau- tiful mosaic of experiences: the island of knights and the mythical Colossus of Rhodes, where Byzantines, Greeks, Venetians and Turks all left something to ensure we’ll re- member them. Standing alongside luxury resorts are vil- lages where women still bake bread in outdoor wood-fired ovens. One of the best-preserved medieval settlements in the world, the Old Town of Rhodes has been declared a UNES- CO World Heritage Site. Protected inside its imposing walls – that mark a boundary between past and present – is the island’s coat of arms. Every stone tells a story. Ancient stat- ues, marble crests, fountains, mosques and hammams; the Clock Tower with its breathtaking view of the Aegean… a rich heritage left behind by bygone civilisations. The most famous road in the Old Town of Rhodes is the Street of the Knights, which has been restored to look just as it did in the Middle Ages. At the highest point in the road is a significant attraction: the grandiose castle known as the Palace of the Grand Masters, with its enormous tow- ers, and which is now a wonderful museum. Although no traces of the statue remain, it is said that the Colossus of Rhodes (one of the Seven Wonders of the An- cient World) once stood in place of the statues of deer now found at the harbour. According to the stories, ships sailed beneath its giant legs and every night the passage was closed with an enormous chain. Beach lovers will be left fully satisfied with the shores of Rhodes, thanks to sand, clear water and plenty of water sports. And in a lush, green canyon that’s about a kilometre wide is a unique forest with trees that resemble planes. The smell of the nectar they secrete attracts millions of butter- flies, each with a four orange dots trademark on each wing. Tread carefully so you don’t scare off these miraculous lit- tle angels.
