The City of Seven Hills
Lynchburg, Virginia is a city built on seven distinct hills, which provided the foundation for the city’s early neighborhoods. Today, these hills remain vibrant historic areas that intermingle with a revitalized downtown and overlook the scenic James River. We set our fall catalog at the Academy Center of the Arts and the Virginian Hotel, both of which have undergone extensive renovations and restorations to become anchors in the city’s continued downtown renaissance. Our inaugural Seven Hills collection represents our connection to the city and our strong sense of community. In 2015, Ryan Ford, the founder of Seven Hills Food, resurrected a century-old meat processing plant with a mission to offer sustainable Virginia beef from local farms to butchers, restaurants, and grocery stores across the region. As their business began to flourish, Ryan and his team faced an obstacle: finding a market for their hides that were ending up in our local landfill. We saw an opportunity to collaborate, solve a problem, and tell a story of sustainability and place. To transform these Virginia hides into leather we partnered with the country’s oldest producer of vegetable-tanned leather, Hermann Oak, who’s called St Louis home since 1881. It was a unique opportunity for three like-minded companies to see value in a waste product and join forces to transform these hides into a material that is functional, long-lasting, and luxurious. The resulting collection of bags brings home (literally) the important environmental role leather tanning plays and reminds us that sustainability, while not always convenient, is worth the effort you put into it.
