mous Boka mariners from their long voyages. Thanks to a favourable climate, Mediterranean air and over 200 sunny days annually, this flower flourished here and soon spread far and wide, settling permanently in Herceg Novi. Locals established the Mimosa Festival way back in 1969, and it soon became one of the most popular events in the former Yugoslavia, with the 1975 edi- tion even formally opened by Josip Broz Tito. This year, more than half a century after it came into ex- istence, Herceg Novi will reinvigorate the festival in its best form, accompanied by a series of events. A large number of tourists will celebrate the mimosa, a flow- er that connects winter and spring, and that brings much-needed optimism. Staged over the course of 16 days in this sunni- est city of the Adriatic, there will be top-class enter- tainment, music, gastronomy, cultural, children’s and sporting programmes, concerts, but also one novelty: cooperation with the EXIT festival and the great mu- sic event Winter Flower, headed by world-famous DJ and producer duo Claptone and the most sought-af- ter musical name in the Balkans, Konstrakta and the band Zemlja gruva. The official opening of the 54 th Mimosa Festival has been scheduled for 17 th February, when Marija Šerifović will perform in Igalo. Prior to her concert, Herceg Novi residents and guests will be greeted and entertained with a parade and performance of the Her- ceg Novi Town Music and majorettes. Saturday, 18 th February, will be marked by the feast of mimosa, fish and wine – an event that has been attracting the at- tention of thousands of guests for decades and rep- resents one of the most well-attended Mimosa Festi- val programmes. The first Great Masquerade Ball will be held that same evening at Igalo Spa’s Dr Simo Mi- lošević Institute, with the second such ball to be held at the same venue on 3 rd March. The second weekend of the Mimosa Festival will see visitors enjoy a Zvonko Bogdan concert on 24 th February, while the programme for 25 th February in- cludes the aforementioned “Winter Flower” – which is the result of cooperation between the Mimosa Festival and Exit Festival, as a joint dedication to this winter flower. The final carnival procession will be held in Ig- alo on Saturday 4 th March, after which will follow the traditional burning of Krnevolo, the main culprit for all the misfortunes to have hit Herceg Novi over the past year. The 54 th edition of the Mimosa Festival will conclude that evening with a concert of Toni Cetin- ski. This is the right time for Herceg Novi – there’s no swimming, but there’s plenty of enjoyment!
