Radiant as the end of the world EXHIBITION Hestia, the Belgrade gallery and art residence, is cur- rently hosting an exhibition of paintings by French art- ist Clément Bedel, entitled Radiant as the End of the World, which will remain on show until 26 th February. The exhibition comprises paintings created using the oil on canvas technique, in varying formats, with very in- tense colouring. The series of paintings exhibited serve to question the logical basis of the environmental crisis, which is satu- rated in melancholy and the negativity of coexistence, and which offers evolution into something playful, anar- chic and unpretentiously shrewd. Bedel was born in Strasbourg and arrives in Belgrade from the French city of Mulhouse. He completed his master’s studies at the Nancy National School of Art and Design, Ecole Nationale Superieure d’Art de Nancy, in 2017. Clément actually lived and worked in Belgrade from 2016 to 2020. During his time in Serbia, he also developed a strong attachment to the aesthetics and essence of brutalist architecture. He engages almost exclusively in painting, assembling hybrid elements in an attempt to touch that timeless in- stant of serenity, fullness and silence. Blistavo poput kraja sveta izložba
festival: FEST The International Film Festival, FEST, will take place this year for the 51 st time, from 24 th February to 5 th March, across Belgrade. The first ever FEST, under the slogan “A Brave New World”, opened on 9 th January 1971 at the city’s union house, Dom Sindikata, with a screening of Robert Alt- man’s Mash. Conceived as an annual review of the season’s best films, the Belgrade International Film Festival, FEST, evolved to become one of the most important film festivals and a mainstay of Belgrade’s cultur- al life, alongside which many young generations have grown up. It has been characterised throughout all these years by its great openness to worldwide cinematography, and to all relevant filmmakers, but also to films that won’t be found on cinema repertoires.
Predstavu režira Ivica Buljan, a igraju Alek- sandar Jovanović, Bojana Stojković, Vesna Čipčić, Iva Ilinčić, Mirjana Karanović i mnogi drugi. THEATRE: The Idiot The Belgrade Drama Theatre’s Oliver and Rada Marković Great Stage is scheduled to host the premiere performance of Fyodor Mikhailovich Dostoyevsky’s famous work The Idiot on 20 th February. Directed by Ivi- ca Buljan, the BDP play features Aleksandar Jovanović, Bojana Stojković, Vesna Čipčić, Iva Ilinčić, Mirjana Karanović et al. As Vladimir Tabašević
writes, “The modernity that we live in cries out for the Prince Mysh- kin of our times. What kind of fate would today await that naïve, sincere do-gooder? What high circles would he horrify with his thoughtless cor- diality? His ideal goodness is just cruelty for his social and emotional be- ing. It was with an ironic twist that Dostoevsky called his most beautiful literary character an idiot, while today such ironic distancing is impossi- ble: an ideally good man in today’s world really is an idiot, a small-mind- ed person to be pitied. He is someone who would be despised for daring, in plain sight of all, to exercise virtues that society has neglected, virtues which that same society declaratively supports and lauds. Literal and consistent, Prince Myshkin is an idiot because he can’t help but be hon- est, soulful and gentle. It is mostly because of the best in us that we have to justify ourselves. Perhaps these times are idiotic after all” … U Beogradskom dramskom pozorištu premijera je zakazana za 20. februar/ The Belgrade Drama Theatre is scheduled to host the premiere on 20 th February
