Za pisca i reditelja Demijena Šazela „Vavilon“ je rezultat 15 godina istraživa- nja i izgradnje sveta koji je počeo u njegovoj glavi mnogo pre nego što je otkucao prvi nacrt scenari- ja i zakoračio iza kamere kako bi oživeo svoj ep. – Želeo sam da pogledam pod mikroskopom rane dane umetnič- ke forme i industrije. Na dubljem nivou dopala mi se ideja da posma- tram društvo koje će se promeniti. Holivud je prošao kroz niz brzih i ponekad naizgled kataklizmičkih promena tokom 20-ih godina i ne- ki ljudi su preživeli, ali mnogi nisu. U današnjem smislu, mi bismo to nazvali poremecajem. Gledate kroz šta su ovi ljudi prošli i to vam daje osecaj ljudske cene ambicije koja je privukla toliko ljudi u Los Anđeles u to vreme. Postoji strana priče o toj tranziciji koja je mračnija ne- go što sam ranije video. Otišlo je dalje od dolaska zvuka i uključilo mnoštvo novih moralnih kodek- sa neregulisane zajednice do glo- balne korporativne industrije ko- ju poznajemo danas. Uz sve ovo, Los Anđeles se pretvara iz pretež- no ruralnog pustinjskog grada na početku 20-ih u jedan od najvecih svetskih megalopolisa do kraja de- cenije. Mnogo blistavih novih zgra- da podiglo se iz pepela, ali je viso- ka cena za to plaćena – kaže Šazel. Kopajući dublje po istoriji ere nemog filma, došao je do zaključ- ka o ljudima koji su živeli bučnih dvadesetih i koji se radikalno ra- zlikovao od onoga kako su to vre- me prikazivali u prošlosti. – Često gledamo na to vreme kao da je možda najekstremnija stvar koja se desila bila da smo po- pili previše martinija. Realnost je da su ti ljudi radili u svetu bez ogra- ničenja, gde su se čitava industrija i grad gradili iz temelja, a to zah- teva određenu vrstu ludila. “I wanted to look under the mi- croscope at the early days of an art form and an industry. On a deeper level, I liked the idea of looking at a society undergoing change. Holly- wood underwent a series of rapid and at times seemingly-cataclysmic changes in the ‘20s, and while some people survived, many didn’t. In to- day’s terms, we’d call it disruption. You look at what these people went through and it gives you a sense of the human cost that accompa- nied the kind of ambition that at- tracted so many people to Los An- geles at that time. There’s a darker side to the story of that transition than I’d previously seen. It went be- yond the arrival of sync sound to include a host of new moral codes turning an unregulated communi- ty into the global corporate indus- try that we know today. morphing from a mostly-rural de- sert town at the start of the ‘20s to one of the world’s major meg- alopolises by the decade’s end. A lot of gleaming new buildings and soundstages rose from the ashes, but the human wreckage was con- siderable, says Chazelle. As he delved deeper into the history of the silent film era, he came away with an impression of the people who lived through the Roaring Twenties, which differed radically from the ways it had been portrayed in the past.

For writer and direc- tor Damien Chazelle, Bab- ylon is the result of 15 years of re- search and world-building that started in his head long before he typed the first draft of the script and stepped behind the camera to bring his epic to life.
